Thinking of heading north to Jay Peak in August.  Anyone played it?  Opinions? Comparison with Stowe,
Green Mountain, Mt. Washington, Okemo?

Thanks...

I played Jay Peak a couple of years ago at the Tri-State matches. For those of you scoring at home

1. The "tri" states are Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
2. I was not on the team. I was playing exhibitions against directors from other states.
3. The other tri-state matches were being played at Old Sandwich that weekend - some of my friends thought this was especially hilarious.

I liked the course, and to the delight of all I walked it during practice and the on first day of competition. It was a difficult walk but I would not generalize this course as mountain resort cartball. The brand new hotel was fantastic, as was the young staff who exuded a very friendly and countercultural ski area vibe.

The greens were pretty outrageous, especially for a resort. I delighted in the false edges, kickplates, ridges, etc. but some of my fellow competitors were not amused by the false front on the 11th hole. The course made good use of the land, managing to keep the holes not terribly steep in either direction but still with good movement. Conditions were sensational, especially for October in the Northeast Kingdom.

This was my second Graham Cooke course, the other being Country Club of Vermont. I would characterize them as catch basin-y in the fairway, bold on the green, slightly generic in appearance, grand in scale, scenic and quite challenging. I would play either again.

This course surprised me when I played it two years ago. It is a tough walk, but for a conditioned person, doable. It is very solid mountain golf, adequate width in most hole corridors and presents nice strategy. I look forward to playing it again, and would recommend any serious player or architecture buff check it out.  The greens were in excellent condition and very quick in September 2012 when I played. I've played plenty of forgettable resort courses, Jay Peak was not one of them.

Thanks... JP would appear to be as much as a "hidden gem" as is left on this site.. Surprised there haven't been more comments about it.

The snow may be gone by August - they had over 300" this past winter with 80+" of it coming in March and early April.   :o
