Recent Pete Dye Stuff
« on: July 22, 2006, 07:15:06 PM »
I had the chance to play a Pete Dye course today and I would have sworn that I was playing the same course that I've played several times. It seems to me that Pete and Co. (PB, Perry) might be running low on ideas..? The Dye course @ Barefoot Resort, Dye course @ PGA Village, Hampton Hall, The Dye course at Colleton River, Walkabout Golf Club, and even Whistling Straits....All these course have EXCESSIVE mounding, bunkers too numerous to count, and waste areas lining one side of the fairway on almost every hole......What gives? I feel very underwelmed. I also think that the Pete Dye umbrella needs to give up on the use of centipedegrass in the rough. Seems that alot of his stuff, other than Whisting Straits, getting a better effort, all have a similar feel and are just terrible long, but nothing inspiring...anyone else have that same feeling? Are Pete's days of the Harbour Towns, Crooked Sticks, The Golf Clubs, TPC's over......?

I haven't seen a Pete Dye course in a long time. Oh, I take that back, I just played at LaQuinta Stadium course last month. I was practically getting motion sickness walking around with all that mounding up and down and all around. In general I have liked Pete's courses in the past as they were different than most. He was pushing the envelope in his day, now I prefer the direction Moran, DeVries, Doak, et al. are taking things.
"Perimeter-weighted fairways", The best euphemism for containment mounding I've ever heard.

I have not played a Pete Dye golf course (new PD) in a long time, but I can tell you that I felt like there was a rut being developed.  When shapers tried things new they were simply re-built, re-done, or "blown up" and we put in the usual waste area with a sharp edge to the top that creates the line of charm, or throw in a pot bunker.  Lines are very important on a Pete Dye course!

I played Whistling Straits before they altered for the PGA.  That was refreshing to see because the harsh lines were not quite as pronounced.

Bet you guys would be surprised to hear that Pete Dye is
almost 81. Repetition in his work? Maybe.  Most 81 year-olds I know repeat the same story they just told 5 minutes ago! I'm
actually surprised he's still "out in the field."  Teeth of the Dog
may still be my most exciting round of golf.

Take away Bulle Rock, Pete Dye GC and The Straits course @ WS, What has Pete done since the mid 90's to spark any interest? I know that he's spent a good deal of time restoring/renovation his classics-Long Cove, Harbor Town, TPC, Crooked Stick, Casa de Campo, The Ocean Course- but take The Dye course @ Barefoot Resort, Dye course @ PGA Village, Hampton Hall, The Dye course at Colleton River, Kampen Course, TPC @ Virginia and even TPC of New Orleans, (TPC of Katrina, if you will) and you have VERY similar golf courses. Will we remeber Pete for his course of the 1970's and 80's of will we have a bad taste in our mouths because of most of his efforts in the last 10 years...?
