Tom Rinaldi's little piece on luck and chance...
« on: July 23, 2006, 12:31:05 AM »
....in golf in GB was just about the best thing I've ever heard. I wish I'd taped it or could get a copy of it. I can't imagine how anyone could have said it any better than he did. And as I was watching it and listening to it I couldn't help but thinking how much I wished every golfer in America was listening to it too.  ;)

Tom,

I agree with the premise entirely.

I had a problem with the presentation, however.  They always start these segments with a bunch of flowery, poetic language, with some music intended to make the watcher feel sentimental.  ABC is particularly guilty of this sort of thing.  They've been doing this for years.

When I hear the sympathetic music and unnaturally poetic language, I now tend to turn my attention elsewhere.  After a couple minutes of this nonsense, I did manage to catch the punch line, which I agree was thoughtful.  But I'm really tired of this overly sentimental journalism.  And I'm a pretty sentimental guy.  I just don't like ABC telling me when to feel that way.

John Kirk:

Interesting take. I actually like all that flowery sentimentality as it sort of bespeaks a heightened passion about the subject and that helps to convert, I think. I saw Merion's pro yesterday and I mentioned that piece and that I hoped all his members saw it. He said he sure hoped so too.  ;)

One of the great things about this week's tournament is the various lies players are getting around the green.  We're seeing all sorts of short shots.

Have a laugh on me the next time that damn music plays.  They'll bring it out today for sure.  They may in fact repeat the segment in question.  Off to the course!

" Off to the course!"

John Kirk:

You're actually going to the course?

Cool.

If you get close enough to Tiger to notice would you mind telling me if he shaved smooth today? I'd really appreciate it actually if you could get close enough to him to rub his face a time or two so I can be extra sure. If he's smooth shaven I doubt he'll have that much chance of winning this thing.

Sorry, merely off to our humble home course in North Plains, where I managed to hit 1 fairway today.
