Tiger Woods and persimmon
« on: July 23, 2006, 03:01:21 PM »
After watching the Open this weekend and hearing all of the comments about Woods' driving problems it got me thinking.  Would not a persimmon driver be perfect for Tiger?  It would give him the extra distance when the 2-iron is not enough, it would allow a lower trajectory than the metal fairway woods, but it could keep the distance down so as to make the wild shots not quite so off line.

With his excellent ball striking skills it would seem that he should have excellent ball control with a persimmon headed driver.  The biggest negative is that it is much more difficult to fine tune the specs of wood, and thus will be more difficult to find a wooden club which he could feel very comfortable with.  The second and related negative is that it is easier to replicate a metal driver than a persimmon driver, thus the risk of being unable to adequately replace a damaged wooden club.

On the plus side for Nike, think if they could hire a quality craftsman who could create a persimmon driver which Tiger would use to win a major.

What driving trouble does Tiger have? I think he missed one fairway all day today. We should all have Tiger's "troubles".

Steve,

I am referring the problems Tiger has with his driver.

At Hoylake he was fine without a driver.  However, at a soft and long U.S. course, he would have more difficulty trying to compete with a 2-iron off most tees.  Therefore, for a U.S. Open or PGA type of course I wonder if he would find a persimmon driver to be the club he could use with confidence and success off the tee.

I agree with BV.  A modern steel 3-W  has a face as large as an old persimmon driver with a better MOI for forgiveness on off center hits and it also has a center of gravity that allows proper launch for today's lower spinning balls.  I think a modern 3 wood is longer (distance wise) then an old persimmon driver with a steel shaft (same 43 inch standard length too) with more control. A 16 or 17 degree hybrid might have been a better choice for control with a bit more length then his 2 iron if he wished to go that way.

Tiger hits his 2-iron 280 yards.

Why would he want to carry a persimmon driver with less forgiveness than any modern club ?
