Hoylake, Important event there in October 2006
« on: July 16, 2006, 02:12:23 PM »
I am so fired up to be at Hoylake for the Buda Cup in October 2006. This will be the first time for Hoylake to appear on the Buda Cup rotation. There is another event there this week. Lets talk about this lesser known course in  Buda Cup and Open history.

The Golf Channel had a long show from the 1967 Open, great stuff with Nicklaus, the defending champ, Player, young Jacklin, all in contention, and Devincenzo winning by 2 with a lot of great irons shots.

The course looked just like I hope it will be in October, fast and firm and brownish.  The greens appeared to be quite slow.  There was tweaking of the course going on back then, as there was a new short fourth hole and the interior OB was eliminated.

Why has it been almost 40 years off the rota for Hoylake?

Bill,
Tented villages etc.. No room until recent changes. Don't know what they did, but they found room somehow..

England is suffering/enjoying a heatwave at present, and Hoylake is no exception. Sunshine is forecast all week and the temperature is set to be over 30 degrees most of the time. In all my previous visits it has seldom staggered over about 12 degrees! The course is sure to be extremely hard and bouncy, although I think they have been doing some watering to calm it down. You have to hope the wind blows a bit over the weekend - which is surely likely.

As for the big event in October, I think we will face different challenges! Looks like we are up to about 22, and that is before the late rush once the course has been given full play over the next week!

For those familiar with the course, does it favor any particular kind of player (e.g., long, accurate driver, strong [for gouging out of rough], excellent short game, etc.)?

I read on the Open Golf website that the club was able to acquire 10 acres of land adjacent to the course which allowed it to get in more tents, press area, etc. Apparenlty, prior to this they had no room for much more than patrons.
