Prairie Dunes #2

Today's pin placement = shooting fish in a barrel.

Yeh it's Saturday, it's the seniors and birdies have been a bit scarce.

But it looked more like Wednesday at Augusta than a U.S. Open.

They played it at 129 yards. The back tees, which I used 10 years ago are about 160, and I'm nowhere near as good. The USGA only has to protect par against the regular tour, they'd be bullies if they did it here.

Jeff --

Go to your room.

Peter --

129 yds. to a green that funnels toward the hole?
Are they seniors or paraplegics?

I hit the green and carded a six. It may be a pace of play issue. You could have three or four groups on the tee with a difficult hole location, which may be 80% of that green.

Gary,
To which room should Jeff be banished? ???

Close to the same as the third item on the list of great Texas fallacies:

It seems like a half-par hole (par 2.5), with a really interesting green.

We should love it, right?

Or do only par 3.5's and 4.5's work?

(I can't say I ever thought of #2 at Prairie Dunes as a par 2.5. But that seems to be the question.)

Average score on number 2 so far in the tournament is 3.197.  As a par 3 that makes it the 13th hardest hole.  If it really is a par 2.5, it leaps up to number one in difficulty.

With Saturday's funnel pin placement, #2 played as 16th hardest hole.  Average score 2.836.  Average # of putts 1.52 (third lowest for third round).

Gary -- those stats make the first two rounds even more interesting.  Average number of putts for all three rounds is 1.92.  Highest on the course, by far.  Before Saturday's round, the world's best seniors must have averaged over 2 putts on that green.

The (normally) tough green makes up for the ease in hitting it.  Through three rounds it has been hit 75.2% of the time.  Only the first par 5 has been hit more in regulation.

Must be quite a green, that can go from toughest to putt to nearly easiest.

Matt -- Interesting point.  Can't say I favor the 5.5's I've played.

Jim -- Don't get me wrong.. the green and the hole are great.  I thought the Saturday pin placement detracted from #2's greatness.  But maybe I'm wrong.  Thanks for your thoughts on that one.
