What Are The Most Valuable ($$) Architecture Books?
« on: July 08, 2006, 10:40:49 AM »
Take a quick visit to Ebay and it's easy to see that certain architecture books that are out of print have increased in value substantially.
The Confidential Guide seems to be in great demand, and my Cornish and Whitten book, The Architects of Golf, typically fetches a couple hundred if it's in good shape (unlike my copy which has
a crayon doodle that I don't remember putting in the inside cover.)
Fortunately, it only cost me a bargain-bin $9, and it fueled my interest in the subject matter. I've also seen original prints of George Thomas book go for $500 +.

What are some of the most valuable architecture books from an investment perspective and have you ever had a real fortuitous bargain-bin find?

I believe the only copy of the detailed instructions that Colt left of the green plans for Pine Valley would be worth close to seven figures but it's unlikely to ever leave TEP's safe. ;D

Craig -

Mackenzie's Golf Architecture published in 1920 is worth over $1,000. Three times that if signed.

Joyce Wethered and Tom Simpson. The Architectural Side of Golf published in 1929, $2,000 to $3,000. Or $15,000 if you can get one of the limited edition of 50 that was produced.

H.S. Colt and C.H. Alison. Some Essays on Golf Course Architecture published in 1920 $1,200 to $1,500. Double the price if you find a copy with a dust jacket.

Working looking for at bargain bins, no doubt. You never know.
