Paul,
I have to say that in this episode, Brad seems a lot looser then he was for the US Open. Can you imagine how hard it must be to sit next to a guy like Kessler and get everything right? Especially when your having to dig up information and history out of your brain and look good while doing it!

-good to see Golf Talk Dead has been revived under a different star.  David Fay's comments on TGC were quite lively as well.

Tommy - twas interesting when Peter asked him to give it a number from 1-110:  talk about being put on the spot!

Brad had the mock tee on....get him that mousse and Hollywood look out!

and Peter said Tilly and Ross were 2 of the 3 greatest archies of all time...and the third is.....the good Dr.?  CB? who??????

Thanks for putting that up, that was really enjoyable. The line about Tillie sobering up enough to put in 7-8 holes was CLASSIC!! I really liked how Klein explained the conditioning of the course now, as compared to the end of the summer because of the lack of irrigation and the effect that it would have on the scoring.

It's too bad that the networks don't think about covering these wonderful courses with emphasis on what makes them great.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if Klein, Kessler and Crenshaw got together at Prarie Dunes and had a similar discussion - they could go on for hours about each hole and what makes it great and I would enjoy every minute.

Is this the first time Kessler has ever interviewed someone sitting to his right?

These features prove golf architecture and history don't have to be boring.

At the very least boring for people other then us!

Brad, Next time your out here, we're going to get you some more wardrobe from Fred Segal's and a trip to Jose Eber's for a cut, and have you driving around in a Jag XKE.

If your going to be on T.V., you might as well look like your on T.V.!

Tommy: Driving around in a 6 cylinder E Type roadster, preferably an early covered headlight model, is the best.

Hey, I already get my light weight clothing from the guy in Winter Park who writes for Golfweek, Auke Hempenius. As for the hair deal, I bought a jar of some sort of $40 gooey dust (feels like a cross between mayonnaise and magnesium) about four months but haven't used it twice since. Probably need to.

Seriously, the networks could use a little imagination to spice up their tournament telecasts. It would be perfect on a Saturday afternoon, though in order to do that sort of show, what they really need is some corporate sponsorship. Kessler and I are available, if anyone's reading this (besides GCA nerds).

Personally, I think Golfweek TV should be making a mark at trying to unseat The Golf Channel which is about as boring as golf can get.

In terms of Brad and his on-air persona, this episode of the K&K show brought to you by Kellog's Korn Flakes, Post Cereals "I'm KooKoo for KoKo Puffs", Kripsy Kreme and Knott's Berry Farm, he certainly has that Carl Sagan/Michael Crichton look and narrative going on.

I sense a bright and future career in it's most formative stages occuring here.
Kwick Peter Kessler....Your about to be looking at Brad's career sky rocket through the Kosmos.....

Interesting interview.

Can anyone share what of the Donald Ross Newport is still there?

I think I heard Brad say that majority of course is Ross since Tilly did did 8 holes or less, plus a few new bunkers, when he was sober.

Hey Brad, congrats on your interview.  Did Tilly finish any of the greens when he was drunk?

Best I can tell, Newport pro William Davis did the original course, Ross reworked it in 1915 and Tillinghast added all of the (good) holes across the road along the water, plus tinkered with the bunkering of the holes that remained, in the process taking at least seven of the Davis/Ross holes out of commission.

Interestingly, there is a stunning b&w aerial of the place hanging on the clubhouse wall, gifted by President Eisenhower, that shows an incredible array of Tillinghast-styled bunkering. I forgot to inspect the cars in the parking lot to determine their vintage on the aerial, but I do know that Eisenhower played there during his presidency. Ron Forse, who is on retainer (sort of) by the club might know more. After this event, they certainly will need to rebuild all of their bunkers and install proper drainage. Of course the club might not have incentive, since there's no reason to think the USGA will return until the next century - if they keep to their current schedule (1895, 1995, 2006).

Brad, which of the holes at Newport is the Reef hole?  Does it still have Tillinghast's design intent?

Thanks

Jon,
I think I would be better sticking to my duties in the art department at Geoff's and Ran's. The retirement, health and dental benefits are just too good to pass-up!

Tillinghast wrote about and diagramed the REEF hole. I don't think that will be disputed. If I remember correctly the only remaining "original" green is the 10th hole, now playing as the 1st for the Open. I can't remember where I read that but will look around.
