Lawsonia....How about this idea?
« on: June 30, 2006, 09:22:10 AM »
I'm sure as most of the GCA'ers can see.  Lawsonia is a popular choice.   Let me throw out this idea.  How about a national GCA event at Lawsonia?  I'd being willing to plan and organize a two day event.   I would suggest Mid September when the super is able to get the green speeds up to 10-11.  It's a totally different golf course with speeds like that.  Could we get 60-100 guys to participate?  I probably should have done this when I was the DOG.  Oh well,  I can seat 110 in my back dining room. :)   Green Lake needs a little injection of new blood.  The old resort town is starving for fresh activity.   Actually we could use it as a fundraiser for the possible Golf Museum that locals are working on in Green Lake.   What are the thoughts?

Jeff - sounds like a hell of a good idea.  The way things tend to work in here however is "if you organize it, they will come."  That is, it's up to someone to take the reins and do the legwork - publicize on here (asking Ran's permission, of course), then people do tend to come out of the woodwork to attend these things.  60-100 would seem to be a tall order - the two or more day events held so far seem to attract around 40 max - but you never know.

As for timing, not there are events already scheduled as follows:

Early October - Buda Cup (UK)
Early November - Dixie Cup (South Carolina)

That might impact trying to do something THIS mid-September, at least in terms of a national attendance thing, but you never know.  There are quite a few midwesterners who would champ at the bit to do this.

So heck, set a date, make it happen!  Odds are you get a large participation one way or the other.

Actually Jeff and Huck, Ran had mentioned this to me recently and wondered if we could get something together for fall of 2007 since there are already other outtings afoot for this year.  It is my opinion, and I think Jeff can back this up, that Lawsonia is magical in first week of October.  Wisconsin fall colors are about, and after first frosts, the native grasses in the roughs lay down.  Lawsonia has had a bailer come in some years to cut the rough down along about that time.  Then it is sort of stubby and not as beautiful.  But, that isn't a deal breaker by any means.

Personally, I think we are better off going with tentative ideas for fall of 2007 because I would imagine a side trip to Erin Hills would be part of the package.  That will give Erin Hills a year to knock some of the kinks out.  And, Erin Hills will be even more specacular color due to its surroundings at that time of year.

Of course we always have to worry about fall rains that can take away some of the joy.  But, I'll put Wisconsin along side any other state for golf at that time of year when without rains, the ground firms up and golf is just played in crisp air and a golden light.

Dick - sounds great!

And Jeff - that's also the way things work here - Ran tends to do an annual "official" trip to some great destination and that too gets added to the mix.

Lawsonia whenever sounds great to me....

Yes Dick,

Early October can be the best time to play, but weather is iffy.  I'm not sure if they have switched the aerification schedule.  I always waited til the end of September and early October because weekend business was so good and conditions were the best of all year.

I ran an Autumn Scramble the first weekend in October and Super Mike got the greens up to 11-12....oh my gosh....one team had a 5 putt in a scramble!!  Lawsonia greens are quite limited to certain placements at those speeds.

I'll wait to see what Ran has to say before moving forward. Thanks for the input

Jeff, I've never played Lawsonia where green speeds were brought up that high.  I've always felt that Mike normally keeps them very reasonable given the slopes and contours of the amazing greens there.  That is with the exception of distant memories of going there as a boy in late 50s and early 60s with my uncle when irrigation wasn't so advanced and the Links would be really browned out and greens like concrete.

That brings to mind that if we do get the "official" GCA - Ran presiding - we would undoubtedly have a large attendance.  Since many of that lot would be the real variety of so called "whackjobs" they would likely be interested in a little maintenance meld seminar.  I can't think of a better place to bring a group in for a demo of the maintenance operation than Mike's.  It has to be one of the most classic facilities anywhere.  Maybe we could even get Mike's compatriot Scott Schaller from Menasha's North Shore to help talk about his experiences there with core nursery techniques to preserve and have repair stock for the unique blends of evolved cultivars of bents that Lawsonia and North Shore have as opposed to the modern tendancy to try to resurface and reseed greens with the high tech high density new cultivars.  These supers have a different set of tasks due to the desire to keep the old course turf cultivars relavant to the classic designs they support.  Of course Mike has the added task of maintaining a second course of modern design and maintenance meld that is 180* different in techniques (I assume) from the old Links regime.

Or, am I getting too turfhead and whackjob...?  ::) ;D

Sounds like a great idea to me, not too bad of a drive from Chicago.

That's late enough in the year that I might be able to attend (potentially with the wife), and I can concur that the course is in amazing shape at that time of year since my only visit thus far was right in that same time frame.

I've thought of doing this same trip at some point this fall, but with a few other items on the agenda, 2007 might work better for me.

what would be really cool is to play the golf on Friday and Saturday, and hope the Packers were home on Sunday and get a suite for the game........I could help out with that if it works out...........

Mark - make that happen and I don't give a damn what the wife says, I'm there.  Attending a game at Lambeau Field is a life goal of mine.

Oh who the hell am I kidding... change that to I'm there if the wife lets me.  But man does that sound like a trip not to be missed.

I'm going to see the course for the first time in a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to it.
The event for next fall sounds like a great idea. Try to nail down dates by the end of the year if possible.
