Fog can be a friend
« on: June 29, 2006, 03:15:59 PM »
The Ladies' US Open has been postponed until tomorrow due to fog and hopefully this will give the course another day to dry out and play as it was intended to.  It will also cause the women to play 36 holes on Sunday which will make it a very stern test.  I am really looking forward to watching this event, especially if the wind is blowing, to see who can best use her imagination to play the shots required under the conditions.

Agreed, on all counts. The question is, will they have early Sunday coverage for the 3rd Round or will they screw it up? Michelle's popularity could be everyone's friend if they decide to show it. This is the week she gets it done.

Jerry -

I hope that proves to be the case, but I can't see the turf drying out much under a layer of fog. What the course needs is a day (or two) of sunny, windy weather. It sounds like the whole Mid-Atlantic and NorthEast could use about a week of those kind of days!

The weather forecast calls for showers tomorrow AM and then clearing but not really strong winds - let's see what happens.

The issue isn't the turf drying out; it's the soil. The ground out there is saturated, with bunkers washed out of sand and down to dirt. The crew took hoses out there the other night (Monday) and sucked 3 million gallons of water off the course. Tuesday, the far rough, low-lying areas were still virtually saturated. On one hole where they pulled the old hole plug to change cups, the hole filled up with water while they were switching out the liner.

Brad: That's a shame, it really would be fun to watch a tournament played under firm and fast conditions.

I was in Newport yesterday late afternoon... the fog was so thick you could barely see 10 yds in front of you crossing the Jamestown Bridge. Guess it stayed over for the night. It also rained most of the day pretty hard, so I imagine the water removal was also a factor in the USGA calling it so early.

Did you say 3 million gallons of water?

Holy cow.
