Cog Hill- Things to look out for?
« on: June 29, 2006, 04:58:48 PM »
I plan to go out to Cog Hill for the Western Open to photograph the course on Wednesday. I've always seen the course on television and been fascinated by the bunkering. Is there anything else I should look out for? What to expect? I've heard they've lenghthened some of the holes over the year (16th hole for example).

I've always been a fan of flash bunkering and the bunkering is relatively dramatic at Cog Hill, but why does it yield such low scores all the time? Is it simply because it plays soft all the time or does it have something to do with the architecture or lack there of?

Also, to the Chicago GCAers, do you men have any spare tickets for the event?

Trees!  There are lots of them.  It is an aerial golf course and recovery shots are very difficult from the trees and the heavy rough (and it is heavy).

As Mark says, it is a very aerial course, and they keep the greens quite soft.  When the players are dialed in, they can score, as most of the greens are relatively flat.

The major difficulty to me is the design of the green sites, as the greens are large and segmented by deep bunkers that cut into the spaces between the "lobes" of the cloverleaf shaped greens.  This makes the effective green sizes pretty small.  But a player who is "in the zone," "dialed in," can go low if he keeps the tee shots in play and is very accurate with the approach shots.

For the weekend handicap golfer, it's extremely difficult for the same reasons it's relatively simple for the top golfer on his game.

Check out the 4th green shape and it's bunkering, one of the all time favorites of mine

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The 13th and 16th are great par 4s....two of the best I've ever played.  Besides that, I think the course is fun, but unremarkable.

I will be an Open caliber course once it is Reeseified. ;)

And the scores are so low because the par 5s are easy and there are about 7 legit birdie holes on the course.  If these guys play 5, 13, 16 and 18 at even for the week, they will score.

Tiger trying to drive the green on 10 by hitting it over the trees on the left.  He almost made it last year.
