For us mere mortals Hogan's Alley remains in play with its current bunkering.  For the Open Championship, the "Tiger" bunker is added.  When playing Carnoustie in May 2002, one of the caddies pointed out the discolored patch of grass where the "Tiger" bunker had been located from the '98 Open.  For the Carnoustie grounds crew it is a simple matter of building the "Tiger" bunker and removing it after the Championship has been played.  In preparation for the '98 Open several bunkers were moved down the fairway from the tee.  As most revetted bunkers are rebuilt every 5 to 10 years it became a matter of location.

Interesting, that following the brutal set up for the 1999 British Open, Carnostie course manager John Philp gets named by the queen as a Member of the British Empire. That's only one step short of knighthood.
