Boston Suggestions
« on: June 26, 2006, 05:19:11 PM »
I've got a free day in Boston on a company trip coming up in July and I'm contemplating bringing the sticks along for the ride (I fly in on a red-eye and arrive at around 5 in the morning, with my first commitment that evening in the 8 range)

Waverly Oaks has been suggested as a possible candidate, but I wasn't overly enthused with what I've read elsewhere about it or the price/quality ratio it represents.

I'm finding a general scarcity of good public golf in the immediate area, and I am wondering if anyone knows of any either less notable but still worthy layouts, or something within hailing distance that presents a better quality for dollars ratio than Waverly for a Thursday foray onto the links.

Looking for something that's either T-convenient, or worth renting a car for.

Franklin Park was also suggested, but I'm also told that if I walk to the course with a nice set of clubs on my back, there's a reasonable chance I may never even make it to the clubhouse both with my clubs and without any cuts or bruises.

Ryan,

Your best bet real close to Boston is a new track called Granite Links, just to the south of Boston in Quincy/Milton.  I have not played it as been built after I moved away from area but heard rather good things about it.

You've mentioned Waverly down Plymouth way.  Just next door are the 2 Pine Hills courses:

For a less resorty feel try Atlantic:

Plymouth CC is a very good private Ross course that allows public play:

Any of the Plymouth courses will require a car rental.  Probably a 45 minute drive out of town.  In terms of being worthy of the car rental then I would go for Plymouth CC.  Short course with good undulation and very small greens.  I assume coming in from left coast so most likely never played anything like this.  All the others will have that CCFAD feel to them.

Granite Links only 7 miles from downtown so cab ride would be reasonable.

Ryan - here is a pretty recent thread.  I've found it is worth it to get out of town a bit because of pace of play. Prices are pretty reasonable in the area.  You probably can rent a car and play a decent public course for less than you would pay for a junky course in LA.

Definitely consider finding a Donald Ross course if you have not played one.

Red Tail is excellent
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Franklin PArk has it's plusses and minuses, but I would not be overly concerned about your safety there.( although it's certainly not the same neighborhood that Bobby Jones encountered when he played there while at Harvard.)

Try it or George Wright for a good inner -city golf experience.

Thanks all for the suggestions - looks like I may be able to procure an automobile which makes the likes of Plymouth or Red Tail are not out of the question - at this point I'll probably give Plymouth a call and see if they are agreeable to outside play.  Can't go wrong with an old Ross layout coming from the land of Ted Robinson.
