A suggestion for topics
« on: June 26, 2006, 12:28:00 PM »
A recent thread suggested that many threads on this site are really not about architecture and there is less and less discussion of the subject.  I would like to make a suggestion concerning a subject line that could lead to some interesting threads.  There has been an evolution of golf course architecture in many of the courses being built today as designers are recognizing the genius of the classical world and applying some of those features into today's courses. My suggestion is that a member of the group start a thread on a feature/hole and keep the discussion going.  Once he feels that the subject is exhausted then he hands off the discussion to someone else who then starts a new thread on another feature/hole and keeps that going.  I have something in mind but I won't start a thread until I get some positive reaction to my suggestion, and yes, I do have some regulars in mind to pass off to once my subject is exhausted.  What do you think?

Sounds good, let it rip.

Jerry, that is a great idea.   I do love the MacKenzie, Ross, Tillinghast classics, but I also enjoy the work done today by architects whose work seems to spring out of the low profile work done by the masters who couldn't move as much dirt as easily as is possible today.  So looking at modern courses with classical roots one hole at a time is a great suggestion.

As a starter, how about #10 at Friars Head (Coore&Crenshaw) - doesn't this hole put you in mind of a links course with a big dune in play?  The hole plays from about 90 yards forward tee to over 200 yards from the tips, and the dune obscures one's view of the left half of the green.

Please discuss, blue books not required!

Bill: Let's see some more positive reaction before we begin and I do like your suggestion.  I did have something else in mind so if and when my idea is completed I will hand off to you or you can begin - but I would still like to wait a few hours and see how many takers we get.

Excellent idea.  We'd need pictures for each hole, though.  How do the klutzes on here participate?

Now guys, please understand, I am a computer illiterate and I wouldn't begin to try and post pictures.  I would hope that someone smarter than me would post photos, or better yet, I will try to suggest areas where I don't know that photos exist. Okay, I will start a new thread on a subject and when I think it is worn out I will pass it on to Bill McBride to begin the next thread.

I'd be happy to post photos, whenever available.

Look forward to seeing your topic, Jerry.

I like this idea especially with pics since not everyone has played everywhere (duh).  I can't tell you how much better the NGLA threads are with pics.

Jerry, I already started one!  How about that #10 at Friars Head?
