Re:Charles River: Why not on any top 100 lists?

Scott,
then there are six.  Massachusetts has a lot of great courses and the Mass Open seems to go to many of them.  In Minnesota the State Open was held at Bunker Hills every year - a big difference!

I would think that anyone under 280 on these great old courses should have a good chance of winning.  To my surprise, the field in the US Junior fared pretty well last year at Longmeadow.  The Mass Open was there a few years ago and scores were not too low.

The cut fell at 149 ( 9 over ) in the Mass. Open last night.

45 players made the cut out of the original field of 150.

3 players are under par through 36 holes Geoff Sisk from Marshfield is leading at 2 under 138, 2 others at 1 under 139.

3 of the top 6 leaders are Amatuers, pretty cool.

The pins were tough yesterday, hour long thunderstorm slowed the greens a bit in the afternoon and the late tee time guys were helped by the slower speeds on the back side.

The tournament has started another debate war within the membership about that nasty old word (concept) length.

The let's add length faction is screaming about what clubs these guys are hitting in to the greens and the let's leave it alone faction is saying that only three players under par after 36 holes speaks for it self.

CRCC will never be a championship test for National events, it's a great fun, challenging members course that can still hold it's own relevency wise for regional events, it's plenty at 6600 yards for the members and top state players.

We only have one member in the field, Kevin Quinn (brother of Fran Quinn Nationwide Tour guy) and he finished (after the rain)eagle, birdie, par, birdie to make the cut. The eagle coming on the bastardized 15th.

My vote is leave the golf course the hell alone.

Cheers,
Ed

Scott,
Thanks for posting the pix, it looks like the course lays on the land nicely.

Cary,
If you don't mind, pick out a few holes and describe why you like them so much.
What are the weaknesses of the course in your opinion?
I presume the greens are the strength.

Final results are in.  Only the winner (Geoff Sisk, his 5th win) broke par.

In recent years, the Mass Open has been a magnet for mini-tour players, especially many of those who play the New England Pro Tour (formerly the Cleveland Pro Tour), which is a top-quality tour.  So it was definitely a quality field for a state Open.

Ed:

Sorry, but the course had no weaknesses.

It's strenght besides its greens, lies in its amazing topograhy, and the way you have to work the ball both ways plus all the different lies and shots you can hit.

Cary
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cary,
I believe you about the weaknesses, but why is the course not a Doak 10 to the majority of golfers? Is CR going to appeal equally to low and high-handicaps? Is CR the best course you have ever played? If not, what makes the difference for you? I am not trying to challenge your opinion, I am just curious to find out some more details. Thanks in advance.

Why is Charles River not on anybody's top 100 list?

It would definitely be on mine, so please, with such great topography, such a variety of holes, Donald Ross as the architect, great greens, would the Treehouse tell me what I am missing?

I have not played Charles River yet. However, the President of CR prefers Winchester. With so much Ross in New England, it may get a little lost. With something like 97% of the members being Boston College graduates, I am sure the Tap Room at Charles River is Top 10. ;)

Cary:
Missed this thread earlier due to commitments with the Mass Open.  It was a pleasure to have you at the River.

Mike:
I don't prefer Winchester I simply said it is my favorite course in the Boston Area other than the River.

It is the Pub Room not the Tap Room ;) ;D

Mass Open was won by Pro Geoff Siske of Marshfield at three under.  No one else broke par.  One score at even, Michael Harris and third place to former PGA Tour player John Elliott at +3.

It was a great event.

Best
Dave
