Rackham Park
« on: June 20, 2006, 06:51:06 AM »
The City of Detroit in their infinite stupidity is arranging to sell the Rackham Park Golf Clubto supposedly ease their economic woes. The course would be abandonded and turned into housing.

This Ross designed course (with a replacement value of about $ 15MM0 is being let go for $ 4MM.

If there are any GCA people out there from the Motor City, get in touch with me. mjf2349@earthlink.net.

Thanks

Michael:  There is an article on this - June 14  Detroit Free Press.  In the article it states that " philanthorists Horace and Mary Rackham gave the city the 120 acres on a condition: The property must remain a public golf course or the land would revert to their heirs."  Who knows how this will turn out.  It seems a pity.

Michael,

Rackham's front nine is no longer Ross. Those holes were redesigned/rebuilt several years ago now. However, the back nine is original Ross for the most part, and there are a number of excellent holes coming in. The clubhouse architecture is classic too.

I grew up across the river in Windsor, Ontario and still spend quite a bit of time there. I'm very familiar with the Rackham course. So, feel free to drop me a note: jeff@mingaygolf.com

The latest I have heard is that the city of Huntington Woods (where Rackham is located) has made a counteroffer equal to that of the private developer.  http://www.dailytribune.com/stories/061606/loc_rackham001.shtml

I really hope Huntington Woods wins out and Rackham can continue to exist.  I end up playing quite a bit out there at the beginning and end of every year as they are open as long as the grass is visible.  I've played out there with my father the last couple weekends and the course is in the best shape I've ever seen it in.  Would be a shame to lose it.

Anyone play Rackham or Rogel this year?  How are the conditions?   I have some biz in Detroit in July and was thinking of trying to fit in a twilight round or two.
