Mike Sweeney -

A 2nd course is being built in Machrihanish, but I do not believe it is or will be affiliated with the existing golf club. The new club will cater to the investment banker/CEO types, along the lines of Loch Lomond, Doonbeg & Skibo/Carnegie.

Devils Pulpit / Devils Paintbrush in Canada make for a good two course private club.  There is a review under courses by country.

Yes Devil's Pulpit & Paintbrush count, but they're probably not in quite the same league as the other old- world courses mentioned.

Others unmentioned so far (I think) include Congressional and Baltimore CC, and the Pinehurst & Bethpages complexes.

As is usually a very wise thing to do, I'm gonna go with Gene Greco here.

Winged Foot might have the best two-course combination in the USA in terms of architecture and test of golf, but I have zero doubt I'd have more long-term fun at MPCC, as seaside golf is pretty much always gonna be better than parkland for me. I believe I'd get all the test I'd ever need at MPCC, also.

For a very basic reason I believe I'd take Ballybunion over Portrush, btw:  the former has always been very welcoming and one feels like a member for a day; at the latter there are a lot of rules and forbidden places and one feels tolerated more than welcomed.  I believe I'd fit in a lot better at Ballybunion.  I'm among the sick puppies who likes the Cashen, also.

Royal Melbourne and Sunningdale.  RM East is a terribly underrated golf course.

I'm only counting private clubs.

In a few years I doubt The National (Australia) will even be the best 2 course membership in it's 30km radius.

How can you possibly say that after accompanying me to Buckley's Irish Pub until 3AM on that fateful day five years ago?

While Rich Goodale wisely excused himself at a more sensible hour to head back to the hotel and dream of my dental stewardesses and Geoff Childs sped back to CT to keep a furtive nighttime surveillance of his bunkers at Yale, YOU STAYED AND FOLLOWED ME INTO THE Guinness Abyss!

   How wise was that?!!!

If you include the 9-hole, par-3 Cliffs Course, the Olympic Club (Lake & Ocean) is a very attractive package.

Having played both Sunningdale Old & New in one day, it would be  hard to beat that 36 holes of golf. Berkshire Red & Blue is darn nice as well.

Having been to almost all of the ones mentioned in the USA, Winged Foot, Baltusrol, Olympic, LACC, Monterey Peninsula, Champions, Oak Hill, Baltimore are the best in terms of memberships, which doesn't include resorts.  A couple of those you could throw out because of the members you have to associate with and others because of the poor green committes and superintendents.

I stand very much corrected.

Wise, not always.

Fun, that one can count on without a doubt.

The National (Australia)

What happened to the THIRD course there, Matt?

There's a third course?  ;)

Merion, the sporty West  course is a nice foil /complement to the splendid  East.

WF is close, I especially like  2,4,13, and 17 !!  on the east

MPCC   and  Sunnigdale also come to mind

I've barely played a single course named on this list, but to me there would be something said for a bit of variety. What about clubs that have two very different courses -- an old-school, classic course and a newer, modern course? To me that would be a lot of fun as a member.

One day you can play a classic, the next day, you can play soemthing pretty new.
