Ansley Golf Club?
« on: May 30, 2006, 10:48:27 PM »
I hate to even ask, considering that I have lived in Atlanta a third of my life but I happened across Ansley Golf Club this weekend and as my wife said:  "I can't believe that you don't know anything about this course"...well I don't know anything about it other than what I have read on their website.  I realize that Settindown is associated with it and I have played and love Settindown.  It looks pretty intriguing. What else can you tell me?  Pardon my ignorance.  Thanks.

For others' benefit, link to website:

I played there over 25 years ago after a bachelor party.  My college roommate's dad was a member and he woke us early after a couple hours' sleep.  I was still faced and felt like I was trying to hit a bowling ball with a spaghetti noodle.  But enough about me.  Here's what I remember:

Very intimate nine hole course in a lovely mid-town neighborhood.  Two greens on the fourth.  What the website calls a hazard is actually an open concrete v-shaped drainage culvert very much in play on the 1st, 2nd and 8th.  Some amazing caroms out of there.

I believe it was totally torn up a few years ago for a major sewer project.  The late, great Southern humorist Lewis Grizzard was a regular in the grill room.

FWIW,

Mike

The Ansley in-town nine is not a very interesting course, but it idoes have the virtue of being in-town. Which is not a minor thing these days.

Yes Bogey, Lewis Grizzard held court in the Men's Grill for many years. I don't think he was ever not there when I visited. He usually sat in the card room, facing the bar, so he could catch the eye of the bartender when emergencies arose. And they arose frequently.

My roommate from law school had a stepfather who was a member there. We used to play it all the time back in the 80's. I remeber very little about the course, except the 2 green hole, and it was pretty flat. They had a very big membership for a 9 hole course, but the course didn't get much play. It was more of a social club with a golf course amenity. Sunday brunch brought out a great collection of southern bells.
