Changes at Augusta, holes # 12 AND 13
« on: December 06, 2011, 07:28:35 AM »
Back in the early 90's, 12 1/2 inches of rain in 24 hours caused Rae's Creek to flood and obliterate the 11th green, bunkers on 11 and 12, the bridge , 12 tee and the permanent scoreboard. It took 6 weeks to repair the damage.

I recall a conversation I had with a member of the Green staff, a senior member, who told me that in 1982, the 11th and 12 th greens and the area between the 12th tee and the creek were raised exactly 4 feet.

Does anyone on this august and learned board have any information on this drastic change? I've researched it and can't find any info . Perhaps TD and other architects on board might enlighten me. I would be very interested as to how this was done and how long it took and why.

Pete,

At the time (1991) I was involved with a project in south Florida whereby we were using an Australian  firm's technology in constructing tees and other features.  I think the firm's name was " Laser Turf".  Obviously the used lasers to produce precision results.

ANGC sought their services for the work on "Amen Corner"

Since we had a break in our schedule we released them to engage the ANGC project.

I have all of the records in Florida.  The next time I visit I'll go thru the files for you

Pete -

There was a lot of press coverage when the elevations of those greens were raised after the big flood, though I don't recall the year. 1982 sounds about right. I would look at GD back issues or check out the Augusta Chronicle archives. The details shouldn't be hard to find.
