The Coolest Thing
« on: May 23, 2006, 09:49:36 AM »
Yesterday I was practicing my putting at a course about a minute from my house.  It was a quiet, slow day, and I was having some of my normal $1 putt-offs with the pro.

All of a sudden I start to hear this loud roar, ad then I see like 20 kids--no more than 10 or 11 years of age, and they all jump on the putting green, excited to play.  Maybe their father (or one kid's father who took all of them) went inside the pro shop, came out and gathered all the boys.  In five foursomes, these kids teed off the first tee.  They were'nt the greatest player's in the world, but I figured that would come with time.

I slowly just watched all of them tee off, and even on occassion the pro and I would run down on the course and go to a spot where we could see  some of the kid's.  Their etiquette was awesome, and they were all having a great time.

I was like, this is really cool.  I hope this is the kind of stuff golf in the future get's to look forward to.

The best part about this story is the part you left out.  The part about the pro complaining about the kids ruining the course, and making too much noise, and being too boisterous, etc.

Or the part about the members complaining to the starter about how the kids will play slowly, and can't they restrict them to a later tee time?

Martin,

Member's were pretty nice and did not seem to mind.  It was a slow day, because of rain, but that made me even more surprised to see that many youngsters being excited to play golf.

And, like I said, when we watched them play, their etiquetee was awesome (replacing divots, ballmarks, not too loud, etc).

I dont know, I was just really happy to see what the future of this game may be.

Jordan,

I'm sure you went over and made sure all their shirts were tucked in.

Send them over to Oakmont, Ill take them from bunker to bunker and let them stomp down the bunkers to a normal size.

Jordan:

Thanks for sharing the playful story about the juniors. It sounds like you were able to take a peek at the future of our sport. With more juniors here-and-there, enjoying the game as you described, hopefully it will prevent a facility or two, from having to close their doors.
