How about the Phoenix/Scottsdale area courses - isn't there an ideal group of 3 including perhaps Desert Forest, Whisper Rock and the Golf Club?  Aren't there 3 great ones around Detroit?

I've done the Bandon Dunes / Pacific Dunes 54 walking combination multiple days, and it always leaves me quite satsified.

Both of our trips out there have been in late June, so we've got plenty of day to rest, eat, and be merry between rounds.  Starting the golf at 6:30 AM makes for a long day when you don't finish until around 10:00 PM.  It's always waking up for the next morning's tee time that makes the day feel just a bit longer.

Could I imagine more - possibly - but why be greedy!

I've done the old-school Minneapolis U.S. Open courses in a single day -- Interlachen and Minikahda. Don't know what I'd pick for a third. Within 10 miles are a bunch of good courses -- Minneapolis, Golden Valley, underrated Oak Ridge. Hazeltine is only about 25 minutes. Same with Somerset.

On my fiftieth birthday, I played Wentworth West, Wenthworth east (9 Holes) Sunningdale new and old.  With dinner at Wentworth, it was a pretty good day.

Iam assurred by those who've done it that a big engined 'rib' can get you from Portrush to Machrihanish in 30 mins.  Add Portstewart and you've quite a day.

This is not just a hypothetical question. We have a golf addict who is member of The National Golf Club, Cape Schanck, called Ian McWah. Requiring little sleep or food,
he regularly plays 54-holes of competition in a day, comprised of one round over the Ocean, Moonah and Old. Talk about "Ants in your pants!" He did the unthinkable some 18 months ago, winning all three competitions from his handicap of 5 or 6. From memory his combined score (adjusted for par and stableford) was just a few over par for the whole day.

Others have tried Ian's stunts and say it is one of the best golfing days' going. All three layouts are vastly different and present unique challenges.

Back before the days of fractional jet ownership a certain business jet manufacture was known to do Pine Valley -Cypress Point one day golf junkets to show off the capabilities of it .8 Mach business jet.  The CEO was a member at both.   That's a darn fine 36 hole day.

Hard to pick from that list that began the thread. Sean Arble nailed it for me with the Rye combo, and the St Enodoc combo. I also had thought of Andy Troeger's Michigan combo, and of course Arcadia Bluffs could be substituted with High Pointe depending on one's interest. Of course, no rational person would even consider taking CD or Kingsley out of the equation.
    I wouldn't mind doing one of these trifectas, but the problem is as Thomas of Huckaby stated is some courses you are not going to want to leave. I really enjoy having a flow to my long days of golf, and stopping, packing up and starting over again would diminish the enjoyment. So I guess only a Bandon Dunes or St Andrews combo would be of interest. One other that would be reasonable would be Sebonack, NGLA, Shinnecock. I think I'll go with the last one.

If their jets are that fast, how about a quick morning 18 at TOC, jet over the atlantic to Pine Valley, then continue following the sun to Cypress Point.  Now that's what I call a great 54-hole golf day (or should I say day and a half).

Peter - there's an article in one of the monthly Golf Magazines - I think it's Links - where George Peper led a groud that did pretty much that.  TOC-Winged Foot - Cypress (or maybe it was Pebble?).  In any case, they actually did it... and finished exhausted and exhilirated.

It was a lot of fun.

I am sitting here in the Dornoch Public Library reading this thread. It might very well inspire me to play RDGC, Brora & Golspie all in one day while I am here!

In the meantime, I am surprised none of my SF Bay Area comrades has suggested OC Lake, San Francisco GC and Lake Merced, which between them have hosted multiple USGA Championships and a Curtis Cup. Harding Park ain't a bad back-up option either! You can almost walk from one of those courses to another.

Tim,Take Spyglass's par threes, please. The third is an okay drop down short iron with a pleasing ocean view over a bunch of houses. The fifth, a demanding long iron from the back. The twelth a good mid iron with water on the left, not too much difficulty here, the fifteenth another drop down wedge, pretty easy.
Go to the Dunes. The fourth a superb Biarritz of 238 yards with a stream to the left and a forest to the right. The seventh a delightful long iron from the back across a deep depression and well bunkered. The tenth, picked out by Raynor and completed by Hunter/ MacKenzie, one of the great vistas in golf and a tiny green and then, the piece de resistance, the fourteenth. From the back, 177 to 189  yards across rocks and ocean to a green perched on the edge of the world. I am afraid Spyglass cannot compare.
We could then go on to discuss the five par threes on the Shore but that would just be a sadistic overkill. Bob

Bob, you're obviously biased toward MPCC, to call the third at Spyglass an ordinary hole is ridiculous. If I used all the adjectives you did for MPCC on Spyglass I could make it sound better than Cypress Point(I won't and it isn't, but neither is MPCC) The experience of playing may change my mind, but I doubt it. Spyglass is superior and the critics agree, I don't recall seeing MPCC on any top 100 lists.
