Above California's (Coastal) Golf Courses
« on: November 05, 2002, 06:53:16 PM »
Interesting website that features photos above California's coastline, taken for the purpose of documenting the developement, oops, change to the coast over the years.  The founders of the project/site state that they were able to successfully fight against the development of resort course at San Simeon Point.

It is really hard to believe that there is a more beautiful stretch of land and sea, and the courses designed within it, then the Monterey/Carmel area.

I have selected a few photo's for you to ponder:

The first link is Pebble Beach.
Is that the new tree or old tree by the green on 18?

Thanks Mike for posting these.

Mike-
Thanks for the pictures. I had heard about that site recently on public radio.
There is a stretch of genuine links/dunes land on the coast just below Gazos Creek, which is 5-10 miles south of Pigeon Point and north of the Ano Nuevo Point(in between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz!). While it is part of the Ano Nuevo state park and probably will always remain so, it would make a great site for one hell of a seaside golf course.
If you can throw pictures of that area up on this site, I would love to see them. Thanks.

Me, again.

The second link is Cypress.  Wow does it look amazing.

On the 16th and 17th hole, I see small tree plantings.  The most noticable one is the one right by the dead looking tree in the middle of the layup area on 16.  I think I see a couple more under the trees on 17, near where the workers are.  Are they planting a few trees to replace dead or ones that are becoming diseased?

In the next day or so the California Coastal Commission is supposed to vote on the 10 year delayed Coore-Crenshaw course in Santa Barbara.  C&C hope to break ground next year.

David,

Here is a spot just below Ano Nuevo State Beach ... the cliffs could be pretty enticing to design around ...

Mike-
Thanks, but I am thinking of the dunesland north of Point Ano Nuevo, which is pretty much at sea level. I think images 6340 thru 6348 capture the linksland I am talking about. If you ever drive that stretch of the coastline, keep an eye out for it!
As I mentioned above, it is part of the state park system, so you can park (right near where Gazos Creek reaches the ocean), get out and explore this area. We should probably have a small GCA group outing some time and see if we can find a hypothetical golf course routing thru this area! Thanks again for your efforts.

Yep - that does have some great possibilities ... I also saw some old surfing spots from my younger days ... I think I more amazed at some of the cliffs that we had to climb up and down to go surfing ... btw, Duarte's Tavern in Pescadero has an awesome array of artichoke dishes, artichoke soup, artichoke omelet and world famous cioppino ...

Mike, Yes, I too at one point in my life was a surfer, and went so far as to punch up Cojo/The Ranch (Point Conception) and was simply mind-boggling!

Unfortunately, and I think it s because of Vandenburg AFB, you can't punch up Jalama Beach, just north of Point Conception, which is another one of the great surfing spots in California.

For those of you that have never seen the movie "Big Sunday" and have little interest in the California Coastline..Can you imagine what kind of a breathtaking course could be built on this? Also, Somewhere around this point, Jackson Brown has his main residence in the hills. when surfing the Ranch or Cojo, you have to access it by boat, and you cannot traspass on the coastline as it is private and severely protected. In fact, legend has it (Urban Surfer Legend) that you can be fired upon if you set foot there. There is nothing they can do while your in the water.

Mike,
To let you know about the first picture I posted, that is the site of the former San Pedro Golf & Country Club which was featured in one picture in George Thomas' Golf Architecture In America.

I have felt for a long time that there might be the possiblility of some remains of the 16th and 17 holes, but after looking at countless aerials and actualy trying to get own to that low corner, only to be shooed away for tresspassing, it has remained in limbo. Thanks to your find with this website, I think I can save my dignity with the citizens of San Pedro.

Its not there.

To let you know, 16 played from up near the road on the left side of the picture and went rolling downhill to a green. It looks as if it may have been a pretty fun run-up shot, going down to the green.

It also looks like the original site of #17 still might be there, just graded to all living hell. It was a par 3 that played along the cliff.

You'll have to wait for a description of the rest in Daniel Wexler's next volume of......The Missing Links:)

John,
Cowabunga! (or at least something spelt like that!)

For some reason, the images aren't showing for me anymore. If anyone wants to see them, right mouse click on the icon for the image and click on properties. Copy that address and it will take you there.

Tommy,

They have always said that in California you can do 2 different sports in one day (golf and snow ski) but in your first picture, golf and surfing would be perfect.  Of course, the tides would dictate whether you have a morning or afternoon tee time.

I love the break, right off the shoal (you can even see the sand bar) a nice long ride and then a little beach break.  Probably warmer water than us NorCal guys are used to.

They didn't take any good pictures at Maverick's instead focusing on the radar dish.

Mike

Ps:  I was down in Orange County over the weekend, and I stopped in more surf shops than golf shops ...

;)  Lighten up in advance!

Is that the new tree or old tree by the green on 18?

New tree.  The old one never had the mulch circle around it.

:o Sacred California land ommmmmmmmmm :-X  Wholeheartedly agreed, think they built on most of the best land, fellas (Cypress, Spyglass and the houses built near Spyglass (There's the  :'(-those houses.).

The history of the Olympic Ocean Course should provide a pretty good argument about the stability of much of this land and if not Ocean Trails should finish it.

(Here I go bashing again with a reality check.  Sorry. )

Some of these cliffs, etc aren't really all that exciting and a lot of the land is just on the ocean, not really very special.  (I've also driven a lot of these coastal roads previously).  I remember driving from HMB to Santa Cruz looking for "Another Pebble site, maybe 20+ years ago and being pretty disappointed and never finding much except land sloping to cliffs (Coastal erosion).  This is geologically pretty unstable land with really soggy/adobe-like soil. :'(  California coastal land is incredibly geologically active.

And let's not forget the uncertainty principle.  Just think what these might have been had no one ever even observed them! (Short visual presentation inthe movie The man Who Wasn't There for those unaware of physics).  Maybe that's the best of all.  Just imagine what isn't there. ;) ;) ;)

Some of the Northern Coast is spectacular, but the weather would make building and playing these courses nearly impossible.

A lot of very very beautiful!!! land unbuildable for golf courses or unplayable if built.  Not much firm fast "Links" here.

I have never been so disappointed in the Emperor.

It's BIG WEDNESDAY, Tommy.

And interestingly, I just told my brother-in-law last week that such is the greatest movie ever made and procured a tape of it off amazon and had it delivered to him.  Gary Busey as the Masochist... great lines such as "been surfing much lately?  Only when necessary".... a perfect summation of life, war, surfing... don't get me started.

As for the pictures, yes, we do have a wonderful coastline here, don't we?  Kinda nice place for a few golf courses.  Some works, some doesn't.

It would be nice to know the scale/distances.  There is some fun to be had with a paint or paintshop application.

Thanks

This is great stuff!  Thanks.

Eric P

Check out the "Cape Arundel" thread and Michael Moore's use of "movie" technology to superimpose a yardage finder on an aerial.  If you combine his technology and these aerials that David has found you (we?) could do some really interesting things, I think.

Cheers

David,

You need to edit your post and remove a stray space that got in there that wasn't your doing.  It's a minor bug in the DG boards.

Here it is:

Damn this looks familiar... but up and down the coast there are lots of little inlets like this - I've even stopped and hit a ball or two on places just like this!  It is fun exploration.

I wish I could tell better exactly where this is - the zoom out didn't help me much.  There's a chance I have already played this "hole."
