George O'Neil was a golf course architect in the early 1900's.  Does anyone have any information on his work?

He designed South Bend C.C. in South Bend, IN and the Greenbrier Course at the resort in 1925.  Any other input?

Ken

He was the first golf pro at Beverly CC.

Please check the search function.  There were topics about him before.

Ken,
In his winters, the Chicago-based George O'Neil made SoCal his winter home, more specifically in Pasadena where he was the original designer of the Pasadena Golf Club, a really unique, sandy scrub of a golf course. And as of just recent research, I found out he was also the designer of record of The Mountain Meadows Golf Club which was right near the LA County Fairgrounds and is not related to the current Mountain Meadows Golf Course designed by Ted Robinson.

You can see Pasadena Golf Club in Daniel Wexler's excellent Lost Links, which if you don't have by now--consider yourself behind the times! :) (Another shameless book plug!)

Paul,

I did a search prior to asking for information.  Nothing comes up for George O'Neil.

Tommy,

Thanks for some background on O'Neil.  He isn't very well known by my gauge, but he has done some very impressive work all around the country.  By the way, I still consider myself behind the times but I do have Wexler's book!  I'll take a look at it.  It's been a while.  Thanks.

Ken

I used the search function to look for more of a background on on George O'Neil and couldn't find much. I see that a few others were looking for some information and I thought I would offer what little I have.

South Bend CC is my home club and one of O'Neil's few designs. The course is great strategic layout that is really fun to play, day in and day out. If any of you have any questions about the course and its design or want some pictures, feel free to ask and I'll try my best to help out.

Brian,
Pasadena, from certain aerials was certainly interesting looking, even though it was on a pretty flat piece of land, I think the small movements and really excellent placed hazards made it a gem. Think island fairways on a sea of sand.

Mountain Meadows on the other hand was/is just the opposite. My feelings are that the current Mountain Meadows course might indeed be the original, only altered by....hurrrumph, hurrumph.... Ted Robinson.... The character of the holes on the back nine there are pretty interesting. Of course Ted has altered a lot and I've never really taken any time to look at an aerial from the old days there. Still, it looks to be a course of some pretty imaginative preportions and even some of the Robinson holes work to some degree.

I'm supposed to play SBCC tomorrow afternoon. Weather permitting I'll try to take some pictures and maybe even be able to go to the effort of following one of those tutorials on how to post them! :)

We have been doing some work at Barrington Hills CC, an O'Neil and Roseman design NW of O'Hare airport.  Nice low-profile club with a very good set of greens ... maybe a 6 on the Doak scale.

Ken,

You really need to get in touch with Rick Holland.  I'm sure Ralph Livingston or one of the Chicago crowd could IM you his contact info.  He has O'neil's personal scrapbook and is involved with Beverly.

All the best!

Didn't Langford do a lot of work there in the later 40's?  Does anyone know how much is O'Neil Roseman and how much is Langford?
