Royal Dornoch (pictures)
« on: May 13, 2006, 03:49:19 PM »
Well, just posting some pictures from my round this Thursday.

Actually, I found the Championship Course a bit overrated with some really weird and unfair design features. The staff in the pro shop acted a bit rude and refused to grant my wishes for a cart. They also didn't have any spare batteries for my range finder!

Alright... seriously, I was completly sold after the excellent 2nd hole. Nuff said. On with the gloomy shots.

If I decided to move there, how tough would it be to find work?
That might be the most glorious golf landscape that I ever seen.

The photo of the 15th really captures Dornoch.  Outstanding.

By the way, I'm not kidding about the moving idea.
Is the economy decent over there?
I'm a sales guy.
Any chance to find work in that area?

A course that I found pretty hard to photograph.  Something about wanting to take pictures that truly reflect its beauty and feel.  You have succeeded where I failed.  A pretty good day and time of year for pictures wasn't it?
Thanks.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Ted Kramer,

Wait'll you actually go.  I was there last summer.  My travelling companion dropped me off at Brora then hauled our stuff to Dornoch.  When she returned to pick me up the first thing she said was "we're staying."

She's not even a golfer.

You should message David Tepper.

And you could call Luigi's Cafe in Dornoch and ask for Chris Surmonte.  He's a NJ native who was able to get residence there because he holds dual citizenship (EU).  He knows the ins and outs quite well.

Cheers,
Gary

Ted,
Rich Goodale and David Tepper are the gents to get in touch with regarding any possible move. David bought a house there about two years ago.

Eric,
You were REALLY scaring me there for a minute. My favorite course across the pond for how well it tests all aspects of your game. I would love to see more pix if you have any. I dropped and broke my camera while I was there with similar gorse two years ago.

Thanks for the pics, Eric.  I particularly like the one of the 16th, which shows many of the charms of its tee shot, one of the finest in all of the world of golf.

Ted

If you want to move to Scotland legally, do what I did and marry a Scotswoman (Mrs. Kramer, if she exists, may not like that idea, however.....).  Work is available in Dornoch, but don't expect anything more than subsistence wages.  That being said, "subsistence" in the finer parts of Scotland is far preferable to "affluence" in many parts of the USA.....

There are far too few people who understand, as do you and I, of the brilliance of the 16th, particularly off the tee.

I think I could just stand there and hit balls up that 16th all day and watch them rumble and ramble in and out of sight.

Rcih, how does the government there perceive bigamy?   ::) :-X

Apparently our government is fine with it. In fact the deputy Prime Minister has just been rehearsing such a possiblity but the papers spoilt it by telling all of us and his first wife!

Due to distance constraints, I wonder if I might prevail on some of you local Dornach Firth vacinity blokes to do a bit of vetting and pre-selection, and when you get a likely candidate from that area... give me a call. :o ;D

Ted:

Have you read "As Season in Dornoch" by Lorne Rubenstein?  It provides some insight about the experience of other folks how have done the same thing you propose.

Eric:

Thanks for the pics.  I am scheduled to play Dornoch in October.  Your pics make me yearn for the Fall!
All architects will be a lot more comfortable when the powers that be in golf finally solve the ball problem. If the distance to be gotten with the ball continues to increase, it will be necessary to go to 7,500 and even 8000 yard courses.

Rihc,

Yes a brilliant hole. I still hate that damn bunker in the right LZ--the last of many that I found on my one and only visit. In fact I think these photos capture several others!  ::) :o :'(

One of many reasons why one round at a great course like Royal  Dornoch can't do it justice...

Eric,

Is that really the same course???  The bunkering looks so drastically different than the rest of the  pics.  Am I missing something here?
