A well designed and maintained golf hole will defend itself just fine. Par is of only limited relevance. The conditions of the day determine what is an "appropriate" score for the hole.

Look into the recent thread on Pac Dunes back nine to confirm that even for a number of hard cores on a site like this, par becomes an all pervading and overly relevant benchmark, whatever some of those same guys would say in a different thread like this one.
