Tim,
I live about five to seven minutes from Coyote Hills. I avoid it like I would avoid a $10.00 hooker with no teeth....

Wigs,
Take the time and go to my sister's restaurant for an excellent meal instead. (As far as golf is concerned)

Mike's suggestion regarding Costa Mesa is probably the strongest suggestion as far as good golf. I also favor the Strawberry Farms suggestion simply because its a decent atmosphere, architecture that isn't anything ground-breaking but does in fact have some good golf holes which are obvious that Doug DeCinces had no hand in changing or influencing; like the 10th, a interesting and challenging Cape Hole. Given the client and the routing and environmental constraints to the site, the Architect did a very good job.

The clubhouse is fun; an oustanding practice facility and as Ryan suggests, the DeCinces Chicken.

Also, 30 minutes from door to door is possible--if your in a Bell Jet Ranger..... Actually with no traffic its doable IF, and I say IF there is no traffic; take I-5 South to Jeffrey Road and head towards the water, passing Oak Creek like your avoiding the plague. That is unless your having trouble with insomnia. You'll eventually cross the 405 on Jeffrey, just keep on driving and you seel this most majsetic hillside, make a left turn at the signal just right past it and follow the road into Strawbery Farms.

I like that drive in there too. Brings back the old feel of seeing the golf course before the round starts as your driving in, raising your excitement to hit a golf ball to a nice level. You know, just like Rustic Canyon, only it's not nearly the same golf course, which means you'll probably love the place! That is unless you see that $10.00 hooker standing on the road just off of the 4th hole and you feel like wooing her back in Anaheim......There's always the Denny's or Howard Johnson's that you can impress her with.... I think they both serve Coors or Budweiser too!

Actually, a $10 hooker with bad teeth would be worse.

Tommy,

What is the name of your sister's restaraunt?  I know I owe you Pasta from a bet of some kind.  If you are in town on 5/8, maybew I can pay up.
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

David,

I'll answer for his Emperorship-it's the Cat and the Custard, in La Habra, which is a really long way from Irvine.  Get him to meet you at the El Cholo in Irvine, which is on Jeffrey Road very near Strawberry Farms-Tommy is almost 'la familia' with the owners and did much of the electrical work at this one...and, they are supposed to have the best margaritas in the world.  I can only attest for the shrimp fajitas, which are 'tres magnifico'.

Mike nails it, but actually Mike, I'm 20 minutes tops in traffic from the ACC. I'm so close to Disneyland that many have figured that Goofy is a blood relative....

Wiggs - in my decrepit old state, I read your email and registered not Aneheim but Antietam!  I thought immediately of one of the most fun and unspoiled Ross gems anywhere - Fountain Hills, in nearby Hagerstown, MD.  Sorry this won't work for you in Anaheim but hopefully you can get there someday.

David-- I really hate to break this to you, but you are talking about doing this in 2 weeks? And will still be in the ACC until 3:30? And still believe you have time for a round of golf?

I am in my office in Irvine as I am typing this, and the sun is, as I type, sinking into the Pacific with a few minutes after 7 departure time. Going to be no better in two weeks.

Take Tommy's suggestion, skip the golf, join him for chow, your boss will find that a lot more enjoyable (Listening to Tommy) than the 7 to 10 holes you will get in (and the good holes on Strawberry don't occur until the back side, which you will never see-- and don't expect to rush around the course, there is a lot a late afternoon 9 hole play).  If you get enough margaritas in you, there is a night lighted exec course near the OC airport that you could still play (heck, play it all night and you are next door to the runway for your morning flight out)

And what kind of woman is willing to go there.  Very sad.

Back to the question of the thread, Tommy, is Tijeras Creek too far away for late afternoon golf?  Golfing wise, I would pick that over Tustin Ranch any day of the week.

Yes - Tijeras creek is in Rancho Santa Margarita - i.e. much further south than would be feasible.  I promise you we've exhausted all possibilities that are more/less immediately nearby :)

Jim,
Yes, Tijeras Creek is a much better, make that eons better golf alternative to Tustin Ranch. Recently, Dr. Geoffrey Childs was in town and I actually threatened to take him by there for a good laugh. I just don't know any other way to describe the entrance to Tustin Ranch. It's like looking at someone whose had some really bad looking plastic surgery that's dressed in Prada and you do everything in your power to not have to look at them.

Tommy,
You are going to have to do some sort of penance for putting that hideous looking picture on this site. ;) The very soul of golf shrieks! (or something like that)

If you make a hole in one on that hole, do you frame the picture and put it on your wall with the mounted golf ball?  ;D

What's even more amazing is that the fountain spray comes into play--right smack dab between you and the hole!

As natural as a geyser can get in The OC....

Eric,
Yes, this would be historic and evolutionary in terms of Golf Course Architecture--I need a Bromo....

Are those bunkers or beverage cup holders on the left and right sides of the green?

Tim,
You've been had by that irresistable "Robinsonian" allure. The pictured hole is not the 9th. It's the 11th, which is just left of the monolithic white Disneyland-like Autoutopia cart bridge that greets all that pass into the famed Tustin Raunch gates--a faux Magnolia Lane made out of Royal Palms.

ITS ALL SO OC........

The shot of the moon is exactly what David is going to experience in OC--leaving the ACC at 3:30-4, trying to get to a course to play golf in two weeks-- By the 11th hole the full moon will be overhead--unfortunately "trick photography" is not going to create enough light to continue play without "night lights", and with all the other "wonders" of OC, that is something we do not have on regulation courses.

Another thought--Maybe we should send him to Cota de Caza, where the REAL housewives are! Some REAL action there after sunset.
