Champion turf grass?
« on: April 17, 2006, 08:53:30 AM »
My father's club in Florida is considering regrassing using "Champion" from Champion Turf Farm in Bay City Texas.  Does anyone have any experience with this grass?  Your help is appreciated.

SL,
There have been a couple of threads over the past 6 months or so about Champion, if you can find them.  I've seen it two places, and it was awesome both times.

Shel,

I suggest they contact Rod Lingle, superintendent at Memphis (TN) Country Club.  Among others, he pioneered the use of Champion Bermuda putting surfaces.  The greens there are extremely fast and firm.  I cannot imagine a better playing surface.

The grass apparently holds up extremely well in the humidity and heat while bents tend to stress in the Tennessee transition zone during the summer.  Not an issue in Florida, but they can also be played on year-round here, though they requiring covering if the temp dips below 30.

Champion can play very firm and fast.  It also doesn't have the grain to it that common bermuda or tiff eagle have which gives it more of a bent grass feel.  Doesn't spike up or pitch mark as easily as bent either.

excellent
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I'm in South Texas, and my course redid the greens last year with Champion.  We did not have to overseed in the winter as we normally do, so the course was more playable year round.  There has been a lot more ongoing maintenance than with the previous Bermuda; aeration, sanding, light verticutting, etc.  But nothing that takes the greens out of play.  When they're in good shape, our super is able to cut them down and get them really quick, something that was harder to do with the Bermuda.  From killing the old greens to playing on the new greens was about 9 - 10 weeks last summer/fall.
