A question for our English contingent.  If one had time for only two courses, I presume one would be Sandwich. Would the other be Rye or Deal? or something else?

Alex:  If you can get on Rye, I would put Rye even with Sandwich, maybe even ahead of it.

Deal is an excellent course too but definitely #3 on that list.

Pulborough is West Sussex, yes? I have played it and really enjoyed it.

Alex,

Having had the chance to play Rye and Deal several times during differing times of the year, I'd give a nod to them.

But it depends when you play Rye.  If you can only do it during the summer July-Aug I'd recommend playing Deal and Sandwich.

And for some free sage wisdom Deal has a gent named Neville after the ninth hole and a very engaging club secretary, club historian, and pro shop staff.

So, Deal over Sandwich? Very interesting.  Might I ask why?

Alex,

I think Deal offers many many fine holes, and with a superb tempo throughout the round.  There is such a beauty to the appearant uncomplexity of certain holes compared to other holes where one is laid bare by the topographic givens of that certain portion of land where the other more appearant holes are found.

There is such an array of greens contours, and greens surrounds that one savours after the 18th hole.  From the saucer like 4th green to the wave thrown 16th green, to the tunnel 12th green, one really senses a certain unforced continuity throughout the course.

Probably every ounce of that site has been used to its potential, with such an array of holes as to allow one to appeciate the difference without sensing any are out of character with the whole course.

I agree with Tom D. Rye and Sandwich are 1 and 2 with Deal being a very fun 3rd. Rye is a very special place and Sandwich is well as good a course as there is in England. Deal is wonderful fun golf with many very good holes.

Obviously, Royal St. George's is the cream of this small crop.  Rye, howvever, is one of a kind.  The entire atmosphere is what Americans think of as "old world" England.  The routing imaginately goes over rand around an enourmous sand dune.  One warning wear a jacket when you enter the clubhouse.  The dress code is strictle enforced.  Take it from one who didn't know.
Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.
