The greens of ANGC
« on: April 08, 2006, 08:26:45 PM »
I've never been to ANGC and so it's hard to tell about its greens onTV although just watching the ball filter around after some approach shots sure tells me a lot. One portion of today's telecast gave a really good view of the greens from above and I must say they sure are some of the most unusual shapes I've ever seen---more than I thought seem to be generally shallow and very wide.

Do you think they're some of the most varied shapes of any golf course? Also there's just so much chipping area everywhere around most all of them. Has it always been that way? Do any of the good researchers on here know what ANGC's original total fairway acreage was? I'd very much like to know that with some degree of accuracy.

Shane and Voyteck will soon be here to answer your question in depth.  They are by far the most knowledgeable of all the GCA'ers when it comes to architecture.

Maybe they'll even explain to you how the 9's, when first built, were reversed, and when they were changed to the present course arrangement. Or that Augusta Nat'l was Berkman's nursery prior to being purchased by Jones & Roberts, or even explain to you how each hole changes in direction, why, and by how much. I'm sure they'll regal you with all they know.

Tom:
Good questions and something I noted as well.   I saw a picture of the 12th taken from the creek and the green looked amazing, much more sloped from back to front that I relized.  (I thought it was generally flat).

Tommy:
Having been to Augusta several times I can tell you there are more slopes in those Greens than you can even imagine on TV.  Those greens are varied and interesting but there is a lot of slope and tiers.
You need an HD TV to get a better look ;) ;D

Tom

I believe Mackenzie had a penchant for angled skinny greens;  aren't these apparent at his other courses too:  Alwoodley (to some degree),  Melbourne, Crytal Downs, Cypress and I bet there are others.

One of the creative aspects that perhaps sets Mackenzie apart from the rest.

generally shallow and very wide.

It would also be interesting to know how "shallow and wide" work with the added clausraphobia?

Sorry for the large size of this image, but I thought it might help you see some of the slope in some of the greens.  Here is a picture of the 14th green.  When they say that the 14th doesnt need bunkers to be interesting you can see some of the reason why around this green.

A couple prominant mounds internal to this green.

There are many examples of this at ANGC, but unfortunately I didnt take many pics of them this trip as we only spent a couple hours out on the main course, and the rest of the day at the Par 3 tournament.

Enjoy.

I don't think one of the current greens at Augusta is that of Mackenzie?

The character of those greens is immense. MacKenzie's basic design is still evident in the greens at 1-6, 8-9; the angle of 12, and 14, 17 and 18.

Turboe,
That green looks totally unfair. Any green that you can more then two putt is unfair, thus not good. (or so they say)

Brad, The Sopranos are on, turn off the computer and pay full attention! :)  (Have fun tomorrow!)

Joel, 16 was totally changed by RTJsr.  How much of the surrounds to about 20-30 yards from the greens cut are still essentially MacKenzie's and are the same contours?
