Scioto (Ross/ wilson) vs Ohio classics
« on: April 04, 2006, 10:39:49 AM »
Two questions about Scioto:

Is this layout one of Donald Ross' very best courses/routings

OHio has so many superb classic courses and hidden gems,
so is Scioto  a better arch. design than Kirtland, Camargo,NCR, Mayfield, Brookside, or Canterbury ?

The routing- I have no idea, I have only played about 10 DR courses, so I can't say.As far as the other courses you listed.

Kirtland- I was not high on this place- I'll take Scioto
Camargo- can't go wrong with either, but I will take Camargo
NCR- played here a lot, no bad holes, Scioto has a few questionables, I'll take NCR.
Mayfield- have not played it
Brookside- this might have to go into overtime
Canterbury- among my personal 3 favorites in the country, I have not played it since the new equipment, but 10-12 years ago, I thought it was fair and damn hard and had a wonderful collection of short par 4's long ones, short par 5's long ones and the hardest par 3 in Ohio maybe-17

Given the land the routing is excellent.  He had roads to contend with and so there are corners to the routing.  I wondeer what he would have done if he had more space. 8, 9, and 18 feel a little cramped.

It is better than  Canterbury for sure. I think Camargo is spectacular and I have not seen it since the restoration was complete.  NCR is difficult and one of Dick Wilson't best.  But I pick Scioto above it.  I have not played the othere two.

Tommy,

What issues do you have with Canterbury. If 13 plays as a par 4, I think it is almost perfect. Just wondering.

Glen, I don't really have any issues with Canterbury.  It is a wonderful course.  I especially like the back nine.  It is one of the best courses in the country.  I just think that Scioto and Camargo have better bunkering and green sites.  As for 13 I liked it as a par five.  It was fun and I was chipping for eagle.  Leave it as a par five please.  The finish at Canterbury is probably better than the finish at Scioto.  There are four strong holes to end the round.  I just try to hang on to what ever score I have.

What do those in the know regarding Ohio golf think of The Country Club in Pepper Pike compared to the ones being discussed?

IMO, The Country Club is the best course that Ohio has, that it is not one of the real big boys. I would put it ahead of Moraine and Columbus and Kenwood. I have not played this Sand Ridge or whatever the hell it is called these days, but I would play The Country Club again, before going out there. It has been forever since I played Brookside (Ross) but that is the only one that I can think of that might give it some competition, certainly not Brookside (Columbus).
