Rate the "C"s

 In what order do you place these for a course that you joined (or would join) or play most frequently. My order follows:

      Course
      Competition
      Camaraderie
      Cost
      Convenience
      Carry/ Cart
      Clubhouse
      Cachet
     

     JohnK may want to add Commode ;D

        I'm sure there are more "c"s that I missed.

I would go:

Convenience
Camaraderie
Competition
Course

The rest are relatively irrelevant

Good question.

For me it would go:

Cost (reality of life)
Course (main reason why I'm there, but cost trumps it)
Camaraderie (if 'm joining a club this better be good)
Convenience (it's no use if it's too far away)
Competition (the best of a bunch of unimportant ones to me)
Carry (meaing I can walk and carry, right?)
Clubhouse (matters not)
Cart (matters less)
Cachet (matters not at all, not to me.  Might matter if business reasons were involved, but that's not my reality.)

For me, it's probably something like:

Camaraderie (I'd play anywhere within reason with a fellow gca'er)
Convenience (really tough finding the time as a Mr. Mom/business owner, as an aside, can't imagine there are a lot of us, don't know if that's funny or sad)
Course
Carry






Cart





Cachet






Cost (only because I play so little, if I played more it would probably rank 2nd)


If I were to flesh out my Course Components, it would be:

Crouting
Cgreens
Cland movement
Cnaturalness

In my experience there is a negative correlation between cost and the factors I value.  Also, if you have to ask the cost of golf, you can't afford it.......

George - remember we're talking a place to JOIN or play a LOT of one's golf - not a course to select for a one-time or otherwise infrequent visit.  Does that change your answers.

Rich - good answer re cost.  But aren't those the exact same reasons that would make cost the #1 factor?  It's just the first thing thrown out (for you), the first thing that makes joining a club impossible (for me).

Mayday - "creator" has less meaning than "cachet", for me.  I figure if the course is great, the creator is taken care of.

Course (in the sense that I don't 'not like it' and won't tire of it) and Carry are tied for #1
Cost and Convenience are #2

Competition next in the sense that I want club/member tournaments to play in.  I don't care if there are a lot of players with the same handicap as me, if that's what was meant.  Handicaps allow all to play all.

Camaraderie comes mostly with Competition for me, because I play alone so often otherwise (can't play off others' schedules - kids, ya' know), it is very low on list.

Cachet (had to look it up ::))and Clubhouse mean zilch to me

Cart is automatic opposite of Carry, so figure it out

Great addition.  Of course it matters.  Now reasonable minds might not agree about what is "great" in this area, but one has to admit it's important that one's home course is maintained how he likes it, be it firm and fast and brown or lush and wet and green or somewhere in between.

Given it's rained here in the Bay Area seemingly 28 out of the last 32 days, I'd think Creative Drainage might be the #1 C.

 Sean,

   I thought of adding that one. I think it is a factor when you are shopping around for a place to play but lessens once you decide. Then you just have something justifiable to complain about.

Yeah, changes them a bit, I suppose. I just glanced at the list, didn't read the fine print. :)

Cost would certainly be #1.

Cachet would be dead last. Well, it would be tied with Carts for dead last - either would be a deal killer for me. I'd sooner part with a kidney for $$$ necessary to join an expensive club than join a cartball course! :)

Conditioning would matter, in an inverse sense. I wouldn't want a wall to wall green course (and I certainly wouldn't want to pay for that). I'd seek out firm and fast, preferrably even a bit unkempt.

Camaraderie would probably still top Course, though it would be a lot closer.

Maybe next time I'll read the premise of the thread before posting....

George - no hassles man - I just figured it might change things a bit for you.

Something to consider re cachet... you are a small businessman... can't you foresee taking clients to your club?  Cachet helps big time in that... Not everyone loves unkempt, also.  And remember doing this will help with the Cost "C" as well.. writeoffs....

Course..although if this is not up to scratch..forget the first 2

The rest of the list is very unimportant to me..I would also add that a good practice facility is the first thing I look for.

what about congestion?

Our conditioning has gone steadily downhill as far as firm and fast are concerned. The pitch and run doesn't work, even on the faux-linksy course. But it hasn't degraded enough where a change, and the added cost, is seriously considered.

What has made your course go downhill in the f and f department, othere than the fact that it rains a lot in Portland?  What could have been done, if anything? Has the Poa taken over bent, and does that make a difference in the conditions softening?
