What did we learn from the Florida swing?
« on: March 30, 2006, 12:10:01 AM »
The Florida swing gave us 5 (I'm counting the Tavistock Cup!) different golf courses with very different setups. What "worked"? What didnt work?

An oversimplified recap:

Doral: Typical Florida: water, bunkers, only moderate rough.
Mirasol: Long, crazy run-off greens, big chipping areas.
Bay Hill: Typical Florida but narrower and with heavy rough.
Sawgrass: Short, narrow, lots of trouble, crazy greens, killer rough.
Isleworth: Extremely long, wide, wild and superfast run-off greens.

Which is the best test of a golfer's complete game? Which is the most fun? And which did you most enjoy watching on TV?

1. TPC
2. TPC
3. TPC

-I would say Mirasol was my second favorite in all three categories mentioned.

I did not see much of TPC or any of Isleworth, but Mirasol was very interesting to me because of those greens and how the shots into them have to be in the right place. I don't remember how Mirasol test their driving, but for approaches, chipping and putting, Mirasol was way up there.

TPC showed me ideally firm and fast greens and ideal fairway firmness. I listened carefully to Finchem on that before the tournament started and it wasn't an accident. If the Tour starts giving the tour players greens that firm as a steady diet they may start going to higher spin rate golf balls and I think we know what that may mean.  ;)
