I have to be out that way on business and have an afternoon to kill.  Any public course nearby worth seeing?  Thanks.

I'll go under. Here goes:

www.malibucountryclub.net

A friend recently played there and enjoyed the experience plus it's closer than that other place. Who wants to fight LA traffic?

malibu cc is pretty good, but walking isnt allowed and singles arent allowed either.  It also has its last tee time rather early after noon.
heres a recommendation that may not have showed up on GCA before.  a 9 hole course called penmar-probably less than 10 minutes from where you are staying- is a fun walk, although not notable architechturally (why cant i spell that word this morning?).

Also nearby with architectural interest is the Thomas/Bell Palos Verdes GC with limited public access:

Penmar: Only if you're desperate to actually play and get back in 3 hours.

Penmar, proud home of the Samohi JV golf team as well as the golf teams of a half-dozen other local schools, is from an architecture and maintenance view akin to municipal pasture golf.  It's built on an old recycling dump and is located at the foot of the Santa Monica airport.  Pilots are required to do their takeoff flyouts over the course.  You'll find more interesting features in some of the older biplanes, WWII trainers, and personal jets of the stars than in the course.

I do play there sometimes with my son and his buddy.  In the afternoon, there is a constant 10 to 15 mph breeze.  There are 4 holes upwind, 2 holes crosswind, 3 holes downwind, (UUCDUDDCU).  Penmar is a compact 40ish acre oblong rectangle.  Every hole has a never in use temporary green too.  No par 5's, you could bring a 7 iron and maybe a putter and do just fine.  I have.  The Samohi JV coach likes to say he plays there with just a gap wedge.

For architectural interest, you could always ask to walk Riv or maybe even Brentwood instead.

What's your schedule like on the day you intend to play? Can you break out 2 hours early to go put your name on a wait list?

Rancho Park is right up the street and is crowded but has alot of history. You can go there, put your name on the waiting list, go have lunch, hit balls, putt and then get out. Plaque on 18th tee comemorates Arnie taking a 13 on the whole in a tourney.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I get into LAX around 11 that day and don't have obligations until dinner time, so I will try to get to one of the courses.

If you're in at 11, and you don't have access to any of the local privates in and around Santa Monica (Riv, LACC, Bel Air, Wilshire, Hillcrest) I would strongly consider Rancho Park - former host of the LA Open - 12-17 there can hold their own with just about anything else around.

Tim beat me to the suggestion, but thats precisely what I was getting at if you can break out 2 hours early - you have to wait a couple of hours to get on, but it's worth it.  If you were to the course by Noon, you'd have half a shot at getting out by 1 or 2.

(If it's a weekday.....)
