Mike Keiser and the next great golf site
« on: May 06, 2006, 12:27:04 AM »
Spent yesterday walking around a majestic dunes site near the town of Lloydminster, Alberta, with Mike Keiser, most of his Bandon Dunes team, Bill Coore and Rod Whitman. Lloydminster is about three hours from Edmonton, which is in the middle of Alberta.
The site is remote -- though not as remote as Sand Hills -- and Coore and Whitman agree that it could well be the equal of the site for Sand Hills. The dunes, in this case, are more compact, but the contours of the land are amazing. Some holes are contained within the dunes, while others open to magical vistas.
To give you a sense of how good this site is, Rod and Bill have done a full routing and come to the site several times, though no contract is in place and they haven't been paid a dime. Some of the holes they've come up with are amazing (all 18 had flags), including a par three that reminded everyone of Calamity at Portrush.
Keiser has come up four times, and is blown away by the site. In his mind it is the equal of Sand Hills, where he was a founding member.
The only remaining issue is money. Mike doesn't want to lead the project, feeling it would be best left to a Canadian. Keiser and his team envision a Sand Hills-like course where members would come and stay for days, playing a rugged inland links.
This is someone's opportunity to build timeless, great golf. We'll see if someone can be convinced....

Robert,

Jeff Mingay mentioned this project to me a few weeks ago when we finally caught up in Winnipeg. He can attest that the site is out-of-this-world good, but is unsure as to the financial viability of the project. How many members does Sand Hills have? Given the affluence in Alberta, it does not seem like a stretch to get 250-300 members at a course of this caliber, especially with 1 million people in Edmonton (3 hour drive). The site undulations and soil will yield an excellent golf course at a modest expense, so initiation fees should be pretty low by comparison to many other high-end private ventures.

This is exciting news, please keep us abreast with any developments.

Are some of the Detroit Red Wings lingering in the area to play golf early? ;D
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Robert,

Jeff Mingay was telling me while I was showing him our proposed site that Mike Keiser is only interested in sites with sandy soils, or dunes. Is that the feeling you get too in talking with Keiser?

Is this in Canadian oil sands area? Seems like that would be costly real estate?

SPDB,

The oil sands are north of Edmonton & Llyodminster, and the property in question is 30 minutes (?) south of the latter. I believe the property is owned by the government of Alberta, but I'll let Jeff or Robert confirm that.

Answers now that I'm back in Ontario.

Yes, Keiser seems only interested in sandy sites. He says he has plans for up to six more courses, including five in Oregon. He apparently gets lots of pitches these days.

As for oil sands -- no. This is a site that was considered too wild to be grazing land for cattle.

And no, Mike does not own the land, though there is an option on it locked down for the golf course.

George -- I'll post photos tomorrow.

The Canadian Oil Sands are in the north east corner of Alberta around the city of Ft. McMurray.. I sent Geoff Shackelford some pictures a few weeks ago of the land that the Saskatechewan (which also has oil sands) Government was highlighting as being potentially rich in deposits.. The winter is just so loooong there.. But I think the area where the course is going to be is a very long drive from the oil area.. But one thing is to be said... The oil sands with 180bn barrels of potential oil is going to see a lot of rich people in the future.

Noel, We need oil prices to stay upwards of $50.00 a barrel for the oil sands play to maintain legs.

For new players, maybe.  Suncor and Syncrude Canada make money at $30/bbl (and possibly even less).

Thanks, Robert. I'm looking forward to future posts, on here and your blog.

Site evaluation is still the thing that puzzles me most. If one looks at the world's top 10 in, say, Golf Mag, one sees a pretty wide variety of sites. Similarly, if you looked at each decile (or whatever the word for 10 is that I'm looking for), you'd see a good variety. Each was probably thought of as one of the best sites that particular architect had ever seen.

Kind of like comparing the various Victorias Secret models....

Interesting thought George. Bill said the site was different from Sand Hills, but added that it was its equal. The dunes "are more compact" in Lloydminster, but it was clear from the ground that it was made for golf. Some holes -- like one par three -- nothing would have to be moved at all.

It would be a 6 month golf season from April 15th to October 15th, give or take a few weeks.

That's about right -- I'd suspect it would be closer to the start of May to the end of September.
