« on: March 17, 2006, 11:45:44 AM »
Happy St Patricks Day to all GCA members. The links below are to a couple of short golf stories best enjoyed while sipping on a fine Irish whiskey. Please, no green beer!

Slainte,

Aidan.

Not only an outstanding photographer of the green, but a storyteller too.

Aidan, I'll be raisin' a dark loaf stuffed into a pint mug pretty soon this afternoon, and thank you for your fine contributions here on GCA.

Let me take this opportunity to give a shout out to another fine Irishman named Mike O'Neil.  He is a fine craftsman of bunker construction, and has worked on the crews of none other than The Bunkerhill boys, Coore and Crenshaw teams, and most recently, Tim Liddy in efforts of remodelling the Dukes course at St. Andrews.

Mike is somewhat of a typical well read Irishman, and took his undergrad degree in Literature at Iowa State, to go on to obtain a Landscpe Archie masters degree.

But, of course the love of the literature is in his irish blood and he has dabbled a bit in writing.  I am lucky enough to have a rough draft of an Irish golf short story that he had written, and can only say that we should all encourage this talented (but overly modest) man to pursue writing as well as his LA craft.  I assure you he has soul in both endeavors.

So from one Irishman to another, and another, come out Mike O'Neil and show yerself, you are a talented man. ;D 8)

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be at your back
And may the whole club be watching
When you slam dunk your second shot on 18 at Ballybunion.

Happy St. Pats!!!

To mention and pay tribute to another Irish golf wit or nit...  a timely passage from David Feherty's Q&A, at Golfonline...

Quote
To really understand this Blarney Stone phenomenon, you should know the legend is anyone, but particularly an Irishman, who lays a lip lock on the Blarney Stone, will be deeded with the "gift of gab." It’s a nice concept, but it’s, well, blarney. What makes the Irish so brilliant with words, written or otherwise, is fear. Even Cromwell was reluctant to lop off the head of someone in mid-sentence. We figured if we could keep talking, the English would eventually give up and gallop off in frustration looking for someone a little less loquacious to impale.

But the real truth is I’m petrified of heights and that’s why I’ve never bussed the old boulder. The Blarney Stone is located in Blarney Castle in County Cork. The line is a half mile long and winds up the most claustrophobic four stories of decaying, shoulder scraping, wet, cold and miserable steps you’ve ever seen. As if that’s not enough fun, the castle is almost completely disintegrated. The roof is long gone and when you reach the top level where the stone is located, you have to circumnavigate the entire outside rim of the castle, inches from death. When you finally get to the damn thing, you have to lie down on your back and lean down into a hole with some iron bars to keep you from slithering head first to the rocks below. Two Irish gargoyles hold onto your legs and a couple of leprechauns snag the money that falls out of your pocket. Now for the magic moment; you’re upside down staring at a snot-encrusted rock. If you listen closely, you can hear the e-coli, dengue fever and other lovely viruses having a party.

No, I’ve never kissed the Blarney Stone.

RJ,

I spent the first twenty one years of my life in Cork, a John Daly drive(with the help of a little wind) away from Blarney Castle. In fact John has lent his name to a new course to be opened later this year in Blarney. Itchy feet got the better of me and yearnings to go West have resulted in a Santa Barbara mortgage.

Everything David said about Blarney Castle is 100% on the money. Not sure how a man from the North got to be so bright?!?! If you ever make the pilgrimage to the Emerald Isle and you are between tee times, if kissing a cold slab of concrete blows up you skirt, check out Blarney Castle.
