What is the "Best" course in the Raleigh/Durham area?
« on: March 16, 2006, 04:54:25 PM »
Not being from the area I wondered what everyone's opinion was in regards to the courses in the Raleigh/Durham area.  Public or private what would be your Top 3:

TPC at Wakefield
Old Chatham
Hope Valley

Andrew,

There is Raleigh Country Club, D. Ross, 1948.  Then there is everything else!  ;D

I haven't had the good fortune of playing the Raleigh CC, but I have played Hope Valley many, many times over the years, and it is very, very good in every respect.  A great walk, excellent condition, and a terrific golf course.

I played Hope Valley 2 Decembers ago after not knowing much about it before, and I was really surprised at how good it was....its in an early golf development, and many of the houses are New England style and date back to the 20s.  This was also the site of (I think) one of Byron Nelson's 11 wins in a row in 1945 at the Durham Open.  Oh yeah, and the 18th is a par 3.
