Painswick was often mentioned in the Perranporth thread as a very good and very quirky course. Has there been any threads on this in the past or can anyone tell me anything about it?

If it is Painswick near Gloucester then I've lived less than an hour away my whole life and never played nor heard of it!

That sounds great - photos look fun! Only prob is that I don't do weekends in the summer. Cricket on Saturdays, family on Sundays. I'd be very happy to meet for a round late afternoon in the week after the clocks change.

Painswick is a unique experience.  You will also enjoy the membership, who are as quirky in their way as the golf course!

For the exercise-minded, Painswick is also quite a cardio workout!

  If you ever find a quirkier course please let us know. If you search back to May 2004 you should be able to find a lot of discussion regarding Painswick. It is not the greatest course, it is not in the greatest shape, but it is fun. #6 par 3 is worth the trouble of going to check it out all by itself.

I believe you can see Gloucester from a few of the holes. I think one can look up to the east from your house and see the iron age fortrus at the top of the hill. Also it is just north of the village of Painswick. A splendly kinky golf course that I will never forget.

I cannot think of another course which has green sites inside an iron age fort. One is a blind uphill, you don't say, par 3. Another is a really good long par 3. Another is a drivable but very risk reward par 4. All very fun holes which can turn matches.

Actually, John, there were two of those short 3s over the ramparts, #5 and #10, almost duplicates!

Bill I thought I was hitting long irons to one of them and 9 iron to the other. hmm oh the tricks a mind will play.

JB, as I recall it was long iron to #6 and #12, nine iron or PW to #5 and #10, 8 iron to #7 and #15? down in the hollow, and 7 or 8 iron to the home hole.   Lots of par 3s to keep track of!  Two par 5s and 7 par 3s = par 67.

And #11 was a reachable par 4 up in the fort.  #5, #6, #10, #11 all in the fort.
