Quaker Ridge or Baltimore 5 Farms
« on: March 05, 2006, 07:06:49 PM »
I pefer the splendid par fives at BCC. Id give the edge
to Quaker for its par threes. both courses have several fine two shotters. Perhaps the setting and terrain is slightly more memorable at BCC. In 20 plays, id choose Batlimore 11 times and Quaker 9.     any thoughts?

I haven't played Baltimore but Quaker Ridge is tough as nuts and overall spectacular.  My comments are before a major restoration performed by Gil Hanse which we have not received any word on but I am anxious to see.

They really are very different from each other.  Five Farms is excellent but not nearly as difficult as Quaker.  That said if I had to choose, I would pick Quaker Ridge over BCC every time.  The shots around the greens are demanding at Quaker and demand the full attention of the player.

Joel,

I know that Gil was the last architect to address the severity of QR's first green. (Tom Fazio had a whack at it prior to Gil and wasn't invited back.)

I didn’t know Qr was embarking on a full course restoration, but when you stop to think, Rees Jone’s work is now about ten years old. It may be time to redo bunkers. What is Gil’s charge?

I have heard that the membership is going to renovate their clubhouse. I forget how much it will cost.

Joel ,Tommy and Michael thanks for your comments.

One thing I like about BCC is the 2 consecutive short  par 4s  at#7 and #8. Tommy there are some vey good good greens at 5 Farms also such as 2,4,7, and 14.

Quaker is a wonderful course, I have some great friends there, but they have been through an awful time the past few years. The course has been virtually unplayable for about 3 years and probably won't return to top level playing conditions for another 5 or more. Most likely a combination of poor decisions and bad luck. The money they are spending on the clubhouse should have gone into redoing all their greens, but unfortunately, that is not going to happen. There is no restoration in progress, though Gil would be a great guy to do it if they ever got their act together.
