Tiger's own course who should design?
« on: March 04, 2006, 10:41:20 PM »
Golf Digest's Masters issue speculates that Tiger will buy land near new Jupiter Island estate.  Tiger says no architect has approached him yet with a project.   Who do think would be the partner and what would be the key aspects that together they would bring to a new course to suit his game?

Off the top of my head.. I'd suggest pete dye just to make the course difficult enough to challenge him.

How about "hiring" CB Macdonald to build a 8200 yard replica version of NGLA, bringing the challenges of the course up to the standards demanded by modern technology?  George Bahto and Gib Papazian could oversee the project.  I like the irony of replicating CBM, and I think Tiger might too.

Whoever gets the commission, I'm sure the scorecard will read:

Last year I posted part of an interview where he said designing courses was something he wanted to get into sooner rather than later. He expressed admiration for  the links like stick a pole down on some interesting ground approach.

I do realise that he won't be doing all the work himself, but building his own club might make financial sense.  If he does want to spend a lot of time on a project and yet keep it simple, the only economic model that works is if he takes his payment back over a long period. Ownership would mean he collected all the premium people would pay to play a Tiger Woods course.  Just depends if he wants to take the risk.

I doubt if there will be much if any "risk" involved, not with a guaranteed 9 figure income for the next 5-25 years, not to mention the very likely enthusiasm of Other People who will want to risk their own Money just to pretend they are Tiger's best buddies for a while....

Maybe no architect has approached Tiger to do a project for him but I hear some clients have approached Tiger to do a course for them. The number I heard they offered him to get involved in the design of a golf course is absolutely "out of sight" incredible but I was assured the offer to Tiger was not bogus.

If you want to know the number I heard go ahead and guess. All I'll say is you're getting warmer or your getting colder. Even to a "hot shot" young guy like Tiger Woods who apparently grosses $85 million per year this is not chump change.  ;)

Rich:  Building an 8,200 yard replica of National in Jupiter Island, Florida might cost Tiger more than a year's earnings.

There is a new residential course being developed near Jupiter by Toll Brothers and it's a Greg Norman design:

Is there a quote from Tiger on what is favorite course in the world is (other than Isleworth, of course... ;))?

Because if there is, then it would be a good hint.

My guess is, though, that El Tigre would design the course himself, and use an established architect as a consultant.

With Woods' appreciation for the history of the game, his enjoyment of playing the Open, his trips to Ireland and Scotland, I'd think he would try to create a links course.

But is there linksland on Jupiter Island?

"$5 million plus memberships that can be sold?"

Wayne:

Get outta the damn pool before you freeze to death. Tiger wouldn't even call his Gulfstream pilot for pocket change like that.

"But is there linksland on Jupiter Island?"

Voytek:

What's the matter with you? We're talking Tiger Woods here. What difference does it make if there's no linksland on Jupiter Island. If Tiger felt like it he could turn the entire island into a linksland by the end of the month.

Maybe, he'll do that because unless I'm mistaken (which is always extremely likely) I think I recall Tiger saying TOC was his favorite.

Oh bullticky. Of course he can if he wanted to. It's a bit early yet for him to be showing his hand like that, though. It's only those who are a little slow on the uptake who don't yet realize that Earl was right when he said he's not sure how or why it happened but he's almost positive that for some reason Tiger really is the Second Coming of Christ.

Let's ask Tom MacWood if he thinks Tiger is a restoration, a rennovation, a redesign, or perhaps even an improvement of Christ.  I hope he doesn't think he's a "preservation" of Christ. But whatever he thinks Tiger is I'm pretty sure he thinks William Morris, Horace Hutchinson and the Arts and Crafts Movement are the primary influence on it and for it.

Come on, Tom.  He gets $3 million to play in a golf tournament in Dubai.  That's four days plus travel time.  How much time do you think he has to devote to a golf course design?  OK, maybe $10 million in fees.  I know its not much but it will pay to fuel up his jet for a few years.

I heard it will be called Tigerswood, designed by Ian MacCallister, and maintained by Carl Spackler.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Certainly with his knowledge of Macd, Banks and Raynor, Tiger can only call on our own George Bahto.

Memberships will be free.

I agree it doesn't seem much risk but as they say at IMG,  "a big fat cheque up front is better than an undisclosed future earning stream in the bush" or something like that.
