Like Day and Night: Rolling Green's tree removal
« on: February 17, 2006, 05:38:24 PM »
In a fit of spontanaety and whimsy, Wayne Morrison and I popped in on Rolling Green to see how the tree removal is going.

One word: WOW!

The 2nd and 4th Holes from behind the 4th green. Note the Bill Vostinak Cemetary for Trees at the bottom of the hill.

Looking across the 15th and 18th fairways from near the 6th green- gives an idea of the type of tree thinning going on between the holes.

Lastly, the trees along the 7th hole near the green are comin' down.  :)

The work is showing a lot of promise. Wayne and I peeked under a few tarps and the greens are a cut and roll away from summer standards it would seem.

Great work on a great golf course.

Nice photos, Kyle.  How did the photos of the 4th greensite come out?  If OK, any chance you can post them?  How did the panorama shot come out?

They came out fine, except for the sun. I ran out of upload space on flickr for the month, so if you can get them on, I'll email them to you. That's why I didn't post - I had room for three photos to upload.

I do have to assemble the panorama but I am thinking it will be great once I do.

That first picture is breathtaking though, isn't it?

I can't upload them in the .htm format.  They weren't very illustrative in any case.  Glare and stuff.  The photos you posted show the process very well.  Good seeing you today.

Wayne,

You can just change the suffix to .jpg by using "Save As." The only one that really turned out well was the one from the spot you said to take it from.  :)

I, too, enjoyed your company this afternoon. Thanks again.

If you watched where there was still snow it leads you to the trees that need to go.

Kyle,

Great pictures. The blinding white bunker sand on the 7th hole lacks a natural look. I like the shaping though. ;)

Kyle,

You guys are sick!!   Some have said "Just take down every evergreen there". This sounds too simple to me , but I actually agree it is correct.

Look at those trees on the left side of #2 in the photo. Those evergreens ruin the strategy designed into that hole. The green was designed to punish shots from the left. The hardwoods between #1 and #2 were planted in the 30's and make sense because they protect people walking up #2 from a wayward teeball  off #1.They also allow some sort of shot towards the green.

Hopefully, people will now realize that the cart path on #4 needs to go down the left side of the hole .  Every time we do something good it leads to the next idea.  The amazing thing is it usually just puts us back where we were 70 years ago!!

Wayne and I were tempted to form the snow in the general shape and location of the infamous "MorrPaul" bunker and then take a picture from about 200 yards out.

Malone would have soiled his dickies!

Looks like you have a discrimination problem or did the evergreens terrorize the neighborhood? The project looks fine,
and I can even place myself. Will now deduct two strokes from my score, not that it helps.

"Will now deduct two strokes from my score, not that it helps."

Don't forget, Peter.  With some of those trees down, the lines of instinct may tempt you to try something you might not have done otherwise.  Failure to execute or tempted into something unwise might lead to higher scores.  The line of charm becomes subordinated to the line of instinct and "others" are born out of par or bogey.  Is that Max Behrian? I don't know...time for a nap.

That first picture brought tears to my eyes (I
knew it was coming).

Can you guys come to Lehigh CC

Der Schwartzwalden between 17 and 18
and 1 and 18 need the same treatment. (It looks
so awful I don't have pictures, maybe later today)

Bill,

Looks like some of the areas between holes at Schuylkill Country Club unfortunately. I am eager to see how Jim's work is looking this season!

Rolling Green is even more breathtaking in person. I could stand behind 4 green and watching action there all day. Just duck for pushed shots on 5.  ;D

Now if you'll start mowing fairway all around that bunker complex on #2.... ;D

Now that the tree line on 2 is being thinned back, bringing the fairway up to the left edge of the bunkers and beyond is a terrific idea.  As you may remember, Joe.  Best to be on the outside of this slight dogleg (with the fairway canting left to right also) but the direct line (line of instinct) would tempt a lot of golfers this way.  Great idea!

Joe,

I think now that the play has opened up on the right of #4 the left side of #2 does need to be more enticing. We need to get the golfers focus on #2 tee to be more left. It is interesting how the tree planting on one hole can affect the desire to start planting on the parallel hole.

Dave Staebler and I  took a stroll out there today. He thought expanding the farthest bunker on #2 to the left or adding another in the place of the trees would be interesting.
