Mickey - you're in there with most of the rest of us.  I remain convinced that the only ones getting huge (disportional) benefit are the very high-speed generators.

But I did chase this demon a little two years ago... did the launch monitor thing and experimented with every ball there is.  At least for me, the Callaway HX-Tour was the best.  But it does seem to change based on the individual.  In any case do try the various Callaway models if you haven't already.  Srixon can get out there also...

Of course this is all just theoretical for me now as I move toward using hickories more and more.  ProV1s work best for those.

Being the cheapskate that I am, I was hitting rockflites over 300 yards when I was in college a long time ago. Now I hit them significantly less than 300 yards. I am not benefiting from the ball revolution and I refuse to buy the new drivers with high COR. At least not until I reach scratch. :)

God it hurts to say this but Mr. Mucci is right - practice does make perfect.
Tom, stay strong!  Pelz told me that practice merely makes permanent, so don't give Mucci his due just yet  ;D

Here's my hunch.  If you guys who played well when you were younger would work out some, get yourself in better physical shape, you too would crank out longer drives.  Doesn't take a lot of physical training for guys who are 40+ to get a whole lot stronger. I bet you could take better advantage of the tech improvements.

Huckster

I have found the same.  The HX-Tour is the longest good ball I have tried.  The problem is trying to find logo overruns/practice balls.  They seem to be quite rare.
