TEPaul,

Do you feel that the massive disfigurations that took place in California were rooted more in the culture than the architecture ?

Pat:

Hard for me to say. A Californian could answer that better than me but on some of the interesting Golden Age architecture out there Mother Nature wasn't too kind either.

So, in that case maybe it's a culture thing---sort of like a Sodom and Gommorah kind of thing. You know, those Californians have always been a bit loose, probably immoral and unrighteous too, perhaps even unAmerican---all the exact opposite of us upstanding, clear thinking Easterners. So, I guess one could make a pretty good case that God punishes those lunnies out there much more than us back here, and apparently that means Mother Nature beating the pulp out of some of their golf courses from time to time too.

TEPaul,

In addition to the underlying cultural issue,
It's possible that there could have been a rejection of east coast values that extended to golf course architecture.

It seems that a lot of classic courses underwent the scalpel, in systemic fashion.

Make that #2, 3, 5, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 @ Bel Air...

But you knew that.

All of La Cumbre, Ojai and even many holes at THE LACC.

(Since this was George Thomas Week)

Adam C,

In reference to your point about having played the particular hole before and after to have a legitimate opinion, am I correct in assuming you have played both #5 at Pebble both previous and after Nicklaus' change?  I for one have not.  But I always thought the change from afar was better.  Wasn't the original a bland, uphill hole enclosed by trees?  The change, however, seemed to bring an ocean view that represent the course better with the "persona" of Pebble Beach.  Am I correct when I say the old version of #5 wasn't even where Neville and Grant (or Egan) wanted the original to be, due to property issues?  I thought I read somewhere that Morse had originally wanted as many seaside holes as possible.

I have played #5 at Pebble several times both before and after.

As you said, the plan was to have #5 on the ocean but it could not be done due to a mistake in selling a lot on the ocean.

I would rate the new #5 to be a better hole.  The problem for many on this site is that it does look a bit too much like a Nicklaus hole and could probably have been matched better to the others on the course.
