Definitely a mixture for me:

1.  A course with variety of holes and interesting greens
2.  The ability to walk anytime I want, including with a Sun speed cart
3.  A fast and firm course with a variety of options on most shots
4.  Buddies who play with me and a group regularly and like to play match play
5.  The opportunity to travel and see new courses

And the bonus.............

6.  Maximum 4 hour rounds (and criticized for that by the guys in the grillroom)

I'm with you on firm turf and playing with people you enjoy and play at a good rate. I love some risk-reward options and a couple do or die shots like 10 at Pine Valley.
I also love to travel and play a variety of courses. I couldn't play the same course every week.

I prefer a sport that is unpredictable, element influenced, and extremely taxing on the inner worlings of one's mind. Not a game, played for developer's profit, on canvases ill-suited for either.

2 - A timely round, with little or no wait between shots
3 - The opportunity to walk and not be required to take a cart
4 - The absence on any "crackberries" or cell phones on any one in the group
5 - A number of flush shots!

Ding-Ding-Ding. We have a winner! Any day with all five of these elements is a great day to be alive.

Some of us have adapted to only occasional doses of #4 and there's something to be said for a solo round beginning before the sun rises. But for my part those are the five things to be devoutly pursued at every opportunity available.

1. Good greens running at 9 or more on the stimp
2. My favorite people to play with - some friendly competition
3. A well designed course
4. Walk in under 4 hours
5. Shots that give me a thrill

Its a mix for me, with the slight edge to social recreation, however in a form that I'm rather passionate about!

My five things:
1. Beautiful surroundings
2. Good camaraderie
3. Good competition (I like Rich's addition of internal/external)
4. Getting to play new courses and see new places.
5. Working with young golfers and teaching the game. Seeing the smiles on their faces as they improve or shoot a new career best is priceless!

Prety much all passion.  Cameraderie best after, doesn't detract from the flow, the spirituality.

Great golf:

Interesting routing, nice walk
Interesting green complexes
Interesting strategies
speed of course
speed of play, I prefer to play two-ball or three-ball

I expect to be an outlier here.
