Lake Tahoe -- Napa Valley -- San Fran

It is time for me to make plans for golf this July.  I will be going with 3 other couples to Tahoe, Napa, and last... San Francisco.  The bad part of the trip is that I will only get to play 3 rounds in 12 days.

I think I have a way in at San Francisco Golf Club.
In Napa I will be playing at Green valley Country Club "no choice here"

I need help in Tahoe!!!!! can anyone recommed any golf courses there?

Play Coyote Moon.

Avoid The Resort at Squaw Creek like the plague. An awful golfing experience.

I have ut been to Tahoe, but have not played Edgewood Tahoe. It certainly looks nice on TV and has always ranked as a great public course. I would certainly try and get to Pasatiempo if I was you. Fabulous!

At Tahoe, look into Lahontan - Weiskopf, North Shore. Also, I believe Montrose near Reno is a Tour site that is supposed to be pretty good. And Edgewood is worth a round.

While in Napa, I would definately try to get to Mayacama. Really good Nicklaus and quite a great club with a spa and amazing food that might entertain your wife while you play. This is about 10 miles north of Santa Rosa, so inside an hour from Napa.

More than one casino would have to work together to get enough money for me to ever return to Edgewood. I'd rather play Old Brokaway (not a bad choice.) I haven't played any of the newer courses up there, but of the Big Three of Squaw Creek, Edgewood and Incline, Incline wins by a lot. All three are far to proud of their courses and far too overpriced.

I'd rather blow my money at the Sagebrush Ranch than any of those golf courses I've played around Lake Tahoe.

I'll have to give Brockway a go this summer.  I have heard that is a tricky test through the pines.

If you can figure out a way to get to Marin County, just across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, then the Meadow Club is awesome.  It is my understanding that the Mike DeVries restoration is now complete.  What a great course and place!!!  The 1st, 3rd, and 16th greens are worthy of very, very long look.

Glenn/Adam - Pasa and Meadow Club are each VERY much worth seeing - but the man is asking for courses in Tahoe, as he has SF covered.  Re SFGC though - word is work on the course is starting NOW... player beware.... So yes, Meadow Club might be a better bet if access can be swung.  Pasa is very far from where they're going to be.  Another great alternative would be Mayacama, but that's way up north of  Santa Rosa - seems tough to fit in logistically here.  

Up there in the Tahoe area, well I haven't played it yet but Mr. Huntley has often recommended Coyote Moon - I'd trust his judgement.  I'd say Edgewood Tahoe is nice enough, and it is sorta fun to play the course the athletes and celebs do each summer... but it is WAY WAY WAY overpriced.  If you can get it comped, great, do it.  If not, well......

Old Brockaway is VERY cool - but 9 holes only.

I did not see that Martin was only going to be able to play one round in SF. SFGC is certainly as good as you can do in SF.

Glenn - no hassles - I did read it is he has three rounds - one in SF, one in Napa, one in Tahoe.  While Pasa is absolutely worth doing any time, well... I don't want to be the one he blames when he's gone for an extra 2 hours drive each way.

 

Re SFGC, it certainly would be top choice in SF... I just wonder it if is NOW, or any time before the fall... Remember they are doing a large renovation there on the back nine.  I'd have to guess they have a minimum of 15 real playable holes for the short term... But that's just a guess - I'm sure they find a way to play.  But they are re-doing 13-14-15.

No one has mentioned Old Greenwood yet for Tahoe. I havently played it yet, but it seems worthy consideration from what I've seen of the course. Has anyone played it?

Another good alternative is Granite Bay near Sacramento in between Tahoe and SF. Its a really nice RTJII / Kyle Phillps design that is private 6 days of the week, but open to the public on Mondays.

Still another alternative is Darkhorse in Auburn, CA - about 1 hour from Tahoe which is also worth playing.

Evan - good call - Old Greenwood is pretty darn nice.  

Granite Bay or Darkhorse are both worth doing too, as are several other courses in the "north/east" of Sacto area... And could be done on the way there or back... But sticking to closer to Tahoe, I'd still have to stick with Mr. Huntley's suggestion of Coyote Moon.  I also hear Lahontan is VERY nice... but also very private.

Sorry, Granite Bay is no longer open on Mondays, fully private now, their contract obligation ran out last year. Darkhorse or Catta Verdera(Twelve Bridges) are still public and are the best in the area. I have played Old Greenwood in Truckee and love this Nicklaus course, I think it will become a classic. Not as spectacular as Coyote Moon, but easier on short hitters with awesome greens and condition. Of all the Tahoe/Reno area courses I like Northstar because it is two courses in one, front side meadows and creeks, back side hills and wooded. Also it is the most affordable. Incline Village is also fun.

In any case, well... if the man has an in at SFGC, odds are he can make most other private clubs happen also.  But still it is best to stick with the public until he says otherwise.  Good call.

Interesting re North Star - many people dislike it for exactly the reason you say you like it.  Hell it's always intrigued me and I like it well enough - price is right also for sure, relatively.
