Sorry Craig

but if you want romance...

try sipping a cocktail in a bar high over Taormina where Tayor and Burton did.

See an Opera in the open air with Mount Etna as the backdrop to the stage.

Take a boat round the walled city of Syacuse.

go to the extensive roman ruins on the south of the Island.

2 weeks there and we've yet to see Palermo.

Not even sure there's a golf course but Sean has nailed the correct answer on this one.

(PS my wife went to Bermuda 'before she met me' and she swears she never wants to go back!)

Let's make GCA grate again!

I don't have that problem. My wife has been dying to go to Sicily (the crossroads of civilizations) and we are going there this year!

Can't wait.

Thanks guys

Sean

It's our sticks.  The wife plays too.  As for sex, hard to say how that will turn out, given that we are married......

Craig

As it's celebrating my birthday, I get to pick!

Tony

Pretty much how I pictured Sicily.  I'm focusing in on Taormina too.

Voytek

Great minds think alike.

All

Still up in the air.  The golf in Sicily sucks, and how can I turn down the chance to play a CBM/Doak course?  What good is history, great food and wine, fabulous views and culture going to do for my resume....... :o

Rich I'm going for the clincher.

Hire a car, head North from Toarmina and halfway to the straits you turn left and head up into the mountains and there's 3 small villages (mentioned in about half of the guide books).

In one of them there's the church where Michael Corleone gets married!  You too can sip a beer and walk through those deserted streets.

(In a year and a half as lurker and poster I'm amazed I can't remember a single reference to The Godfather.  I've just remembered why I bought a widescreen TV for Christmas and I'm sure if I check out all 3 films again I'm going to find enough material for 10 threads.  Move over Caddyshack!)

Thanks, Tony

I can see an epic thread linking "The Godfather" films to the titanic struggle for control of the origins of GCA.  Who will emerge as Tom Corleone?  Paul or MacWood?  Or maybe even Huckaby......? :o

Golf is not the only thing Bermuda has over Sicily.
For those concerned with class distinctions, Bermuda does alright in eliminating the rif raf.  Of course, keeping rif raf at arm's length has a price.

Sean I'm given to understand that in Sicily the locals are still engaged in eliminating the rif raf. The funny thing is that even though they look down on those from different clubs, they are all known for their excellent dress sense.

Shifting slightly OT.......

Where would you go for a 5-7 day romantic break in early-mid October--Bermuda or Sicily?  This is assuming you can get on any golf course and stay at any place on either island.

Thanks in advance

Sorry Rich, I've just realised the correct answer to this is Liverpool. :)

Yes, Tony, Bermuda and "dress sense" should never be in the same sentence.  Ooops, I did it again......!

I know this, as my father dressed in Bermudian "fashion" for 15 years at his New York restaurant, and also did a good trade selling lobster hats from the veranda of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club every two years......

Sean

... which is why we haven't been back in many years.  ;)

Actually, if I had Rich's choice, I would probably pick Sicily.

David P - February is great for golf, tennis but useless for swimming or snorkeling. Prices are lower too.

David,

The average air temparature in Bermuda in Feb. is between 60 and 65 degrees, and the water temperature is the same.  February is also a typically windy month in Bermuda.

So it depends on what you want to do when you get there...ideal beach weather it isn't.  Bermuda Day (May 24th I believe) usually symbolizes the start of beach season.

Weather continues to defy traditional logic.  As we discuss the playability of courses in Michigan and Ontario during this January warm spell, the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda was closed briefly last week due to hail:

My grandfather used to play in the Bermuda Goodwill Tournament and their team of 4 didn't change for something like 19 years. Nobody wanted to miss going back to Bermuda they loved it so much. Pink Beach, they said was a fabulous place to stay.

I've been to Bermuda many times growing up on family vacations.

Mid Ocean is still one of my all-time favorites, the entire golfing experience is about as good as it gets.
