What's up with this course, does it have a membership, has anyone played it and if so, what do you think..

John,
I noticed that there has not been a lot of response to your question.  I saw the course from far away while playing at Kukio on the Big Island this past summer.  Not a lot of play on the course.  It sits on the slopes/foothills of one the volcanoes, quite a distance from the ocean.  One of the assistant pro's at Kukio that I played with had just won a tournament at Nanea.  Sounds like they have a good relationship with the local .PGA Section for a fair amount of tournament play.  From a design standpoint, however, I can't tell you very much.

John-  I was on the Big Island last year and couldn't get on-  it's very exclusive.  Charlie apparently spent 60 million bucks to build his own little course for himself and about 40 of his close friends-   probably a bunch from SFGC.  I couldn't find out anything else about it.

Have not been on the Big Island since the course opened but I will be playing there soon. I am told it will be ten minutes from condo to first tee when I make it.  The course is a private enclave of Charles S. and George Roberts with about 100 members, many of which have property on the island.  Large SFGC contingent.  They are about to embark on some bunker work and I do give Chuck credit, the last thing Hawaii needed was another Fazio type course.

Very very limited play.  Just have to know the right people.  I will give a full report after my trip in March.

Hamilton,

Kukio, which is ten minutes from Nanea may be "another Fazio type course" but it it sure is fun to play and certainly is easy on the eye.

Aidan.

From what I understand, Nanea's membership also utilize Kukio's facility. I visited Kukio last March and was blown away by the level of service and the surroundings. This place is the essence of perfection. I believe they also planning another eighteen holes. Adrian, Did you do all the facility photos for Kukio's website? Your work is fabulous...

Grant,

Yes, all the golf course images on the Kukio site are mine. When you get a wonderful palette to play with, it makes it much easier to create good images.

If anyone wants to join, start saving your pennies. Apparently yearly dues are in the neighborhood of 40K.....

I know a number of people who have played it and universally they have said it is fantastic..
