SuperBowl and Golf
« on: January 23, 2006, 08:51:54 AM »
Since the SuperBowl is here in Detroit, I was curious about what clubs the head honchos from Pittsburgh and Seattle are members at.  You would think that Detroit would be Oakland Hills but it is really as Salesman's club.  The big cheeses are at Country Club of Detroit, Bloomfield Hills CC or Franklin Hills.  If you own a Fortune 1000 in Seattle or Pittsburgh, where are you a member?
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Well, in Seattle you almost certainly don't play golf, so the correct answers for what club do you belong to are:

1)  The Tyee Club  (University of Washington big (and I mean big)-money boosters club

2)  The Harbor Club (or one of the other high-end "dining" clubs)

3)  The Seattle Yacht Club

If membership in a golf club were necessary, the old money in Seattle is at the Seattle Golf Club.

Regarding Seattle...

Seattle Golf Club or Broadmoor Country Club.  I believe there have been a few members "of note" at other Seattle golf clubs such as Sand Point, and in suburbian clubs such as Overlake G&CC and Inglewood G&CC.

The Rainier Club is a big-deal private social club as well - the fireplace in the great hall is one to behold, for sure.

If you own a Fortune 1000 in Seattle (Redmond), where are you a member?

Augusta National Golf Club  ;)

I think some of the best private golf in the detroit area is north at Indianwood.

The old course is a classic, and while the new course doesn't quite match up, it presents a very different challenge.

Jeff

I agree that the Old course is one of the best in Michigan.  The club however, was not a real shakers and movers club.  When I was growing up the club was a non-entity in Detroit circles.  Perhaps things have changed now since the suburbs have really spead north in the past 25 years.

Sean,

You are right.  I think Jeff missed the question.  I love Indianwood Old but as a club, it is a private non-equity with two golf courses and many members.  It is mostly a salesman's club and is unbelievably inexpensive to join.  The golf course IMO is superior to Bloomfield Hill CC but if you were looking for the movers and shakers of the Detroit world, Bloomfield has five or more for every one at Indianwood.
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

If this was a battle between Pitt public courses and Seattle public courses I would bet Seattle wins.

The biggest wig in the world is a member of the club I work at, Overlake. Only seen him around once though, there's another little course he likes to tee it up at in Augusta, GA.
 ;)

The neighborhood around Overlake really make it special, the course is only so-so. Seattle Golf Club and Sahalee are far superior courses.

GO HAWKS!!!

PS~ Had to change the logo for a few weeks!
