Ian Andrew goes it alone - Congratulations..

I don't know if Ian has let anyone know or I have missed a thread where it was announced but I just noticed on the bottom of one of his posts a new webiste

http://www.andrewgolf.com/

Congratulations Ian, I have never met or really discussed architectural things with you but always enjoy your honesty and thoughts on here.

Good luck, you will meet tough times and good times (as you already probably know about) but you will LOVE being your own boss and to any client out there in Canada wondering who to choose then here is your man..

Brian.

Ian,
Best of luck to you and congrats for making the leap. Any interesting projects in the works?

Ian,

Very best wishes on your new venture.  I am confident in your success given your talent, passion and personality.  Looking through your sketches convinces me that you are not only an artist on the ground but on paper as well.  Congratulations.  Looking forward to staying in touch and seeing you sometime after the thaw.

Best regards,
Wayne

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the very kind words and encouragement.

Like the world needs another golf architecture firm right ?  ;D

I actually made the decision a year ago, but wanted to leave with all projects completed. Muskoka Bay was in mid-build and I could not walk away from that project - so I settled in for an extra year. I’ve tied up everything nicely for this year, including the Master Plan for the remaining work at St. George’s. Why else would someone leave in the middle of a Canadian winter?   ;)

In the last couple of years I had become extremely comfortable in life. I had lots of renovation clients, some really nice projects to work on, and Cindy and I were very comfortable. The only problem I had was at the same time I had been out to see Pacific Dunes, Friar’s Head, Rustic Canyon and a host of new projects done by some great artists.  I loved their architecture and knew that’s what I wanted to do.

The new work at Carrick Design has always, and will always, reflect Doug’s design philosophy  – and there is nothing wrong with that, it is after all Carrick Design. Well, unfortunately that was not the style that I wanted to build courses in. While I was able to work on a few lay of the land holes (particularly at the rocky site at Muskoka Bay), as a firm we definitely move earth, and that did not sit well with me given the quality of a lot of the land we had. As he continued to shape more, I wanted to shape less, and that creates a philosophical gulf that is hard to bridge. I knew that I wanted to build a different style of course closer to the visions of Coore, Doak etc. and that Rustic Canyon was an awesome philosophical model to follow.

The interesting thing about my difference with Doug’s was his ability to accept this. Doug is a great guy, and quite easy to get along with, so he did not get upset when I told him. I’m not saying he wasn’t surprised, but he understood that at 40, it was time to go. He thought I would stay because I was comfortable, but we both have realized that if I don’t take the risk now, I never will.

I think you all realize that I’m rooted in history, and will always be a renovation and restoration guy. I should remain busy at that task till retirement. I’m also looking forward to taking all those hand-crafting techniques I had to learn to restore classic courses, out onto a new golf course. I unfortunately was not allowed to do any with the new projects.

Doug was kind enough to let me take the clients I brought in with me, which he has no obligation to do; and none of the clients have an obligation to come. I expect to have somewhere around 20 clients after this departure plays itself out over the next few months. Could be more, could be less, but I do know I have some already.

It’s funny, I have not once felt nervous or anxious about the change. I’m just excited to do things my own way. I’m a patient man, so I will search for the right opportunity to finally make my mark. At the moment I would settle for one nice site where I could lovingly and slowly hand craft an entire golf course.

…..or I may starve !  ;D

Ian,

Turns out I wasn't the only sneaky one that found your website last night after reading another one of your posts...
I even had to double check the date when i read the press release!

I think your website is well considered and thorough... certainly a great start!

Best of luck out on your own.

Ian,

Just wanted to chime in with my quick message of encouragement and wishes for nothing but good fortune.  I had heard a rumour out there last year that this was going to take place and after reading your message I admire your class in seeing things through to their completion.   Nice to see the entrepreneurial spirit alive and well for both you and Robert.

Ian -

I was dumb enough to go into business for myself 15+ years ago. My profession is different from yours, but it turned out to be the smartest thing I could have done. Good luck and best wishes.

I just checked out the site. Pretty neat!  I enjoyed reading about the restoration work at Park CC and St. George's, both of which I have played and enjoyed (played St. George's after, loved the work.  Played Park CC before the restoration, can't wait to get back!)

Very cool indeed.  I especially like looking @ the before sketches and then the progression to finished work.  Also the work that you've done on the Shield looks interesting.  It sure must have been a challenge to build!

Ed,

Nothing to announce yet, but I need to finalize the transition from Carrick Design to my own first. As that funny quote from George Bush stated " I'm working on a few initiatives "  ;D

Ryan,

The press release is for Monday morning. I had a close friend write the release and help me with some of the text on the site. I'm not sure if he wants to stay anonymous or not.

Wayne,

With the computer images I rarely sketch (it's too slow), but hopefully I will get a chance quite soon. I appreciated being able to use you, Tom and Mike Nuzzo as sounding boards over the last little while. You have all been a great help.

Dave,

I took home 8 sketch books with all my notes from the last 8 years. I started looking and was quite suprised at what I found. I put a couple of the pages up and the built photos to show you what it became, because I though people would get a kick at seing the process of thought (or lack of  ;D ). Thanks for you comments.

Ian,

Congratulations.  Very exciting.

Like you, my dad was a big part of my golfing life.  I shared many great experiences with him.

Perhaps my travels will find me in Ontario someday.  I have family in Buffalo.

Ian,

Congratulations.  Have much enjoyed your considered and knowledgeable posts.  Good luck with the new venture.

I find myself in the position of also being comfortable, although a bit stale in my line of work.  Unfortunately, unlike you I do not at this time possess the skills to make the same leap of faith that you are doing.

Maybe one day.

I've known Ian for the past five years, and I'm entirely convinced he will be successful at this venture. He's smart and in tune with the pervailing zeitgeist of architecture -- something that is sorely lacking in Canada, and much of the U.S., these days. I've played Ian's new work and almost all of his restoration work and can openly say he's gotten better and better -- to the point where he is setting the tone in many cases for what is being done. He does wild, and fuzzy bunkers at St. George's, and suddenly Tom McBroom is also doing them.

This was a brave move on Ian's part, but I applaud him for it.

Good luck, my friend, not that you need it.

Oh, and whoever did that press release did a fine job.... ;)

Congratulations and best of good fortune.

As Paul mentioned, it takes a lot of self confidence to go that route but I'm really hopeful that it will work out great for you!

Congratulations, Ian, and best of luck.

When I first started on this site, I used to dream of striking it rich and interviewing Tom D to design my course. Now I have to interview Kelly, Brian, Mike, Ian...this dream is getting crowded!
