What about Seattle??

As you know, I am only 15, and dont even get my drivers license for 3 months.  I hear about all these awesome GCA meetings, events and so on at many great courses around the US and Canada and various other places.  But because I am so young and am not even old enough to get a job for three months, I cannot make it to most GCA events :'(  This is sad, I know, but what if there was an event in Seattle??  That would be really cool, and I dont know if anybody has considered it before.  There are some great courses within an hour of Seattle, and many arent too expensive.  Has anyone thought of having a meeting or something in Seattle??  That would be pretty cool.  I dont know how many people would come or could come, but I just thought it might be neat and also a good oppurtunity to play some real nice courses.  How many GCA'ers would consider having a meeting in Seattle??  Just wondering, that's all ;)

How about that 22 days of rain in a row? We could use some of that liquid down here in Oklahoma.

I lived in Seattle for 15 years and played most of the courses and sorry to say but few would be worth flying hundreds/thousands of miles just to play golf at. There are some nice courses if you happen to be in the area for business or pleasure,  but none above  a 7 on the Doak scale.  Tumble Creek? Alderra? The best public course is Olympic Course at Gold Mtn. You are correct there are some very reasonably priced courses though.. you sure get your bang for the buck.

There are a number of GCA members in that area that you could meet up with though and I used to get visitors from other GCA members who were up in that neck of the woods.

You got a whole lifetime of GCA events and more ahead of you.

Lest anyone deem Seattle an "architectural wasteland" I'm betting just about anybody on this site would enjoy Macan's Fircrest, just to name one lesser known course in the area.  That's not to say they'd travel a great distance to do so.  I encourage you to see it if you've not already done so.

Says a lot about a city when you can't get the same group of guys to come there when they would happily drop everything and fly/drive/rollerblade into the middle of nowhere, Nebraska.

What about down the road a ways in Oregon...or even Pumpkin Ridge is pretty nice.  Maybe a round there, then head to Bandon or something along those lines.  Plus, I really want to meet some GCA'ers, and so I didnt know how to ask everybody except through a thread.  I'm sure I'll meet most of you at some point or another though ;)

Seattle is not so bad, I have only received 20 plus inches of rain since the 18th of Dec. (5+ inches in last 48 hrs)...

If any of you redskins fans want a bet on saturdays game, bring it on!!!!!  I'll put up a foursome at my club...

Jordan, this area may not be an architectural wasteland, but it is pretty close.  Almost all of the best courses are private, and as far as they go, they aren't that great compared to the rest of the country.  If you can these are the courses you should try to see, if not play.  A letter to these pros/supers (Mike Hayes may be able to help you here) explaining your desire to learn about architecture would probably work particularly in the winter.  If it ever stops raining, that is.

In no particular order:

Seattle GC
Broadmoor GC
Tacoma CC
Fircrest, as Bogey already pointed out
Sahalee
TPC Snoqualmie
Tumble Creek
Aldarra, where I would be happy to take you out

This just isn't a destination golf location, my friend,
but the other good thing about golf in Seattle is that we are relatively close to Bandon.....

let me stop the bleeding.... and say that jordan, if there ever is a GCA event in Seattle, i'd be more than happy to come down from Vancouver, BC for it.

i've played sahalee, and a few less than stellar public tracks...  but always room for more.  

and let the rest of them THINK it rains here all the time.

It wont rain in the summer ecxept say two or three days.

And this isnt really about football, Michael, but what the heck ;)  You do know that you didnt have to actually TELL everyone Seattle's gonna win the Super Bowl, it's just a given fact.  I mean, everyone already has already put their bets on the Seahawks, even those folks from Indy ;D ;D

BTW...there is a new course going in on the Kitsap Penninsula called Whitehorse (Amy Dye's 1st solo) It might be the coolest layout in the Seattle Area...

Jordan,

I encourage you to take Mr. Leary up on his offer to host you at Aldarra.  He's a good guy and the golf course is pristine with a solid stretch from 3 through 8.

I'm no big fan of TPC Snoqualmie Ridge but the vistas on the back nine rival those at Sand Hills and Cypress Point Club in my book.  Majestic.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I figure this would be a good time to tell you guys how much I appreciate you helping out a 15 year old trying to find his way somewhere in the golf architecture world.  Since joining this site, I have learned so much, some good things, some weird things, but it has all been awesome!!  You guys are really the best, and I hope to continue my goal of becoming a great atchitect.  I am finally starting to read more books and am studying different things about different courses because of what I ahve learned on this site.  So everybody, even John Kavanaugh who taught me about etiquette ;), Thankyou so much for your willingness to help :)

I know letting some kid and his dad play a course so he can learn about architecture might not be a big deal to some of you, but it sure means a ton to me.  Thanks, everybody!!

Poor Seattle has always been a wasteland for golf design excellence. (Always wiill be unless somethingf major happens).  Holding up Sahalee as the "Best in town" what do you expect?

How about Bear Creek?  I remember when that was the hot new thing.  I can't remember a single hole, just the bear claw bunker. (There's a picture of me in front of it somewhere in my basement.  :-[) YIKES!!!!!

I want to add my own home course into the list.  Oakbrook GCC in Tacoma never gets mentioned.  Better than Tacoma G&CC  and on par with Fircrest.  Canadian and Macan protege, Jack Reimer, worked with Macan on Lake Spanaway and lived in Vancouver.  

A GCA event including Fircrest, Oakbrook and Gold Mountain would provide an interesting contrast from 1924 (Fircrest), 1966 (Oakbrook) and 1990's (Olympic Gold mountain).  Maybe we could convince John Harbottle who designed Gold Mountain and did the Fircrest master plan to provide a speech.

Who wants to be in charge?  How about Jordan?

This thread sounds a bit "snobish" to me.

I will travel to Seattle and play golf anyday of the week before I'll head for Nowhere, Nebraska....even if they have naked female caddies at Sand Hill.  ;D

The markets, the sites, kayaking on the sound,the food...hell...the glass museum in Tacoma....
