East Lake Experience
« on: January 06, 2006, 10:02:07 PM »
I am going to tee it up at East Lake in late February and I was curious what its like to tee it up there.  I have a good idea what the course is like since it has been the Tour Championship the last couple of years, but if anyone has any suggestions of what I keep an eye out for or suggestions of other courses to play in the area I am all ears.  Also, for you Atlanta guys what is the weather like at that time of the year?  I can imagine its far better than the Minnesota weather I am currently in.

Thanks in advance.

And remember, just enjoy it...it's not often you get to play real nice courses like Eastlake :)

OK, let's see...

I'm coming from a pretty modest perspective, having had the opprtunity to play East Lake only twice.  The service is impeccable - from the gate guard on through.

Arrive as early as is socially acceptable.  A major part of the experience is wandering around the club house looking at the memorabilia on the walls - including the replicas of the 4 Grand Slam trophies.

The weather in late Februrary is iffy - could be great, could be crappy - but almost certainly better than Minnesota.  It would be unusual to be totally unplayable, though.  Expect dormant Bermuda, especially in the rough - I don't know if they overseed the fairways (which I think are Zyosia).

Take your time.  The course won't likely be busy at this time of year (or any time for that matter).  Hit balls on the range, practice on the green & putt before you tee off - take your time and don't be rushed.

Enjoy your round.  East Lake is very straight-forward - it's all right in front of you - no tricks.  There is a lot of subtlelty in the greens - listen to your caddy if he's a good one.

Channel Bobby Jones.  It will be be great fun.

Andy's reply is perfect.

The range is limited at East Lake, and they call you to it when it is your turn, so use all available time to go through the clubhouse carefully.  If you love the history of the game, you'll be blown away by what you see.  Excellent selection in the pro shop as well, and if you buy anything, they'll have it waiting in a locker for you at the end of your round.  Get all your calls out of the way, because your cellphone will be turned off AND will be in a locker the entire time you are there.

It is walking only, and, as Andy says, let your caddy read your putts for sure.  There is nothing tricky about East Lake; it is classic, understated GCA.  While we all know about the renovations over the years, the fact is that you will be walking  where the gods have walked, so enjoy every part of the experience.

As to the weather, it was about 65 here earlier in the week.  The high today will only be low 40's, but then we're back up to mid-50's tomorrow.  By late Feb., high school golf has already started here, so you certainly have a shot at a decent day.  Really, the odds are that rain will be a bigger problem than cold, though anything's possible, of course.

As to other courses, in the ATL it all depends on where you are staying, how much you are willing/able to drive, and how much access you have.  Tell us those things, and the ATL contingent will make suggestions, I'm sure.

Someone stated in a earlier post that Eastlake is letting unaccompanied play for a hefty price like 325 I believe. Is this true and would it be worth the price for a one time play.

A friend of mine, Dr. Linton Hopkins, who grew up in the club, wrote a small book entitled WHERE BOBBY LEARNED TO PLAY, about 10 years ago. Very few living members know more than Linton about the history of the club and the course. As far as I know the book was only sold locally and is hard to get. There may be copies available in the pro shop. If so, I suggest that you buy one.

Plan on walking. Everyone does. Many of the caddies are young, so take a suitable bag.

East Lake is one of the great experiences in golf, and this is one club house that must be toured.

Steve,

Atlanta weather in February is notoriously volatile.  No exaggeration:  you can have 75 degrees one day and an ice storm the next.  Late February can be surprisingly agreeable, though, and my guess is you'll be ok, especially since you're coming from Minnesota.  I'm pulling for you.

Jim,
I picked up a copy of WHERE BOBBY LEARNED TO PLAY(second edition) a few years ago at Atlanta History Center where the Bobby Jones exhibit DOWN THE FAIRWAY is. They may still have copies available.

I am watching the East Lake Cup on the Golf Channel and I then headed to the website: https://www.eastlakegolfclub.com

Looks like a borderline perfect blend of private-corporate-philanthropy golf?

Interested in the locals view, beyond the golf architecture. Mike Young, Bob Crosby, and others??

EL should be experienced. The clubhouse is full of Jones memorabilia. The grounds and course are beautiful. As Mike notes, there are more interesting golf courses in the area, but EL is a delight to play.

It is not an inexpensive visit. Caddies (required) and green fees can add up quickly.

I think of EL as primarily a charitable organization. It has been very successful and is well-supported. More power to them. The EL Foundation has become a model for golf/neighborhood revitalizations, spawning a number of similar organizations elsewhere.

East Lake is a very fun day.  Aside from everything else already contributed, the caddies usually have some pretty interesting stories and are pro-jocks, so chat them up out there.

I'll DM you about other golf options, but make sure you go to Fox Bros. BBQ before or after your round at East Lake.  I recommend the brisket, wings, fried pickles, and brunswick/mac&cheese mixture.

I second the vote for Fox Bros. Best BBQ in the ATL.

Classic, LOL.
How many on this site have actually played Eastlake and what was the experience like for a nonprofessional? How long did it take to play? Doke scale?
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

East Lake is a solid course, but I don't think it's especially great. Maybe a 5-6 on the Doak scale? There are several par 4s that are nearly identical to each other.

It's a very fun experience overall, though. The clubhouse is full of interesting memorabilia and the grounds are beautiful.

The course usually isn't very busy, or at least hasn't been when I've played. I don't think I've ever had to wait to hit a shot in a handful of rounds.

It’s a shrine to Bobby Jones throughout the clubhouse with some amazing photos, trophies and assorted other pieces. As noted the service and overall experience is terrific. I’ll agree with Edward that the course is solid but unremarkable.
